Incisors as digging tools in molerats (Bathyergidae)

South African Journal of Zoology, 1998
The angle at which the incisors project forward and the amount of enamel per incisor is greater in molerats that use their incisors for digging (genera Georychus and Cryptomys), than in those molerats that do not use the incisors for digging (genus Bathyergus).

Magnetic compass orientation in the subterranean rodentCryptomys hottentotus (Bathyergidae)

Experientia, 1990
To test whether mole-rats Cryptomys hottentotus were able to use the magnetic field for orientation, laboratory experiments were conducted which were based on the animals' spontaneous tendency to build their nests at the same position in a circular arena. In the local geomagnetic field, the animals preferred the SE-sector.

Emmonsiosis of subterranean rodents (Bathyergidae, Spalacidae) in Africa and Israel

Medical Mycology, 2005
The presence of adiaspores of the fungal genus Emmonsia was examined in the lungs of 85 mole rats representing 3 subterranean genera: blind mole rats (Spalax galili and S. golani) from Israel, Ansell's mole-rats (Cryptomys anselli) from Zambia, and silvery mole-rats (Heliophobius argenteocinereus) from Malawi and Zambia. Emmonsiosis was found in 28% of

Karyotype of the giant mole-rat, Cryptomys mechowi (Rodentia, Bathyergidae)

Cytogenetic and Genome Research, 1993
The karyotype of the giant mole-rat, Cryptomys mechowi (Rodentia, Bathyergidae), from Zambia was investigated in one male and one female by means of G-, C-, and AgNOR-banding techniques. The diploid chromosomal set consisted of 40 biarmed chromosomes (2n = 40, NF = 80).
