Function of extra-ocular photoreceptors in bathypelagic cephalopods
Deep Sea Research and Oceanographic Abstracts, 1972The photosensitive vesicles of four species of bathypelagic cephalopods are examined. In species of Bathyteuthis the vesicles appear to function in the detection of bioluminescent light from organisms located outside the visual field. In Galiteuthis phyllura the vesicles may function both in detecting bioluminescent light and down-welling surface light.

Composition of the swim-bladder gas in bathypelagic fishes
Deep Sea Research (1953), 1957Abstract Measurements were made of swim-bladder size and gas composition on pelagic fish in the eastern Pacific. The physiological problem of vertical migration with a swim-bladder is discussed. It is concluded that some gas-containing fish migrate vertically but that net-collecting data is too fragmentary to determine if such fish are primarily ...

Bathypelagic pycnogonids (Arthropoda, Pycnogonida) from the Discovery deep-sea cruises
Journal of Natural History, 2002The donation to The Natural History Museum, London of the Institute of Oceanographic Sciences (IOS) Discovery collections in 1997 included pycnogonids taken in bathypelagic samples collected with a rectangular mid-water trawl. The material of Pallenopsis tritonis Hoek, 1883 in these collections has been analysed and reported elsewhere.

Geographic distribution of the bathypelagic genus paraeuchaeta (Copepoda, Calanoida)
Hydrobiologia, 1994The geographic distribution of the bathypelagic calanoid genus Paraeuchaeta was investigated by examining midwater trawl and plankton net samples collected mostly from depths exceeding 1000 m throughout the world’s oceans. Of the 81 species referred to Paraeuchaeta, the geographic ranges of about 50 species could be defined with reasonable certainty ...
