The Bitter Taste of Brazil's Temporary Import Ban on Robusta Coffee

open access: yesAgribusiness, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Brazil, a leading Robusta coffee producer and exporter, faced a significant drought in 2016–2017, which drastically reduced production and depleted stocks. Consequently, Brazil temporarily permitted the import of one million 60‐kg bags of Robusta coffee in the spring 2017. An import ban was imposed shortly afterward due to lobbying by domestic

Risk for Rabies Transmission from Encounters with Bats, Colorado, 1977–1996

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 1999
To assess the risk for rabies transmission to humans by bats, we analyzed the prevalence of rabies in bats that encountered humans from 1977 to 1996 and characterized the bat-human encounters. Rabies was diagnosed in 685 (15%) of 4,470 bats tested.

Personalized Kirigami Strain Sensors for in vivo Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
Rapid prototyping of strain sensors is demonstrated using a laser cutter that both converts carbon‐based material to strain responsible graphene and generates cuts in a kirigami‐style pattern that allows enhanced substrate flexibility. This method is used to generate wearable sensors for monitoring heart rate, limb/finger motion, and abdominal ...

Replication and shedding of MERS-CoV in Jamaican fruit bats (Artibeus jamaicensis)

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2016
The emergence of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) highlights the zoonotic potential of Betacoronaviruses. Investigations into the origin of MERS-CoV have focused on two potential reservoirs: bats and camels.

Flight of the Future: An Experimental Analysis of Event‐Based Vision for Online Perception Onboard Flapping‐Wing Robots

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
A thorough analysis of event‐based vision for flapping‐wing robots is presented, with emphasis on hardware integration, suitability under challenging flight conditions, and real‐time performance. Theoretical and experimental studies demonstrate how these sensors enable robust and efficient onboard perception for ornithopters, thereby advancing autonomy
