Optimal battery capacity of grid-connected PV-battery systems considering battery degradation

Renewable Energy, 2022
Abstract The optimal capacity of a battery energy storage system (BESS) is significant to the economy of energy systems and photovoltaic (PV) self-consumption. In this study, considering the long-term battery degradation, a mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) model was proposed for the PV-battery systems which aim to minimize the life cycle ...

Battery Degradation and Ageing

2001
Batteries are subject to degradation in storage due to a variety of chemical mechanisms, such as limited thermal stability of materials in storage, e.g. silver oxide in silver - zinc batteries, or corrosion of metal electrodes, e.g. lead in lead - acid batteries or lithium in lithium / thionyl chloride batteries.

Capacity degradation of lithium rechargeable batteries

Journal of Power Sources, 2005
Abstract Li rechargeable cells made with structural arrangement Li/membrane/LixV2O5 were examined under different charge states using ac impedance, environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and the high-resolution nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR).

Detection method of battery cell degradation

2011 IEEE Vehicle Power and Propulsion Conference, 2011
This paper introduces a method, which precisely estimates deviations in the State-of-Charge and resistance values of the cells in a battery pack. The aim of the algorithm is to provide the required information a) for an early detection of cell failures and b) to decide, which cells must be charged or discharged by the charge equalization circuit.

Li-Ion Battery Deep Discharge Degradation

ECS Transactions, 2016
Deep discharging or over-charging of Li-ion cells must be avoided to ensure sufficient life-time and sometimes also the operation safety of these batteries. BMS circuits co-operating with the charger and forbidding deep discharging of the cells are necessarily present in battery packs.

Battery Degradation Platform and Model for Realistic Battery Use Cases

2020 4th International Conference on Smart Grid and Smart Cities (ICSGSC), 2020
In this paper, the mathematical evaluation model, extended wear density function (WDF), that evaluates battery remaining life is proposed. Also, a data platform to be utilized for the extended WDF is proposed. The previous WDF doesn’t consider three factors; operation temperature, current, and operating state-of-charge (SOC).

A Reduced-Order Battery Degradation Model for Battery Management Systems

ECS Meeting Abstracts, 2017
An accurate and prompt prediction of the State of Health (SOH) of lithium ion batteries is a critical process for a Battery Management System (BMS). In this work, a single particle-based degradation model is developed by focusing on Solid Electrolyte Interface (SEI) layer formation and its evolution, which is coupled with the crack propagation due to

(Invited) Microstructural Degradation in Rechargeable Batteries

ECS Meeting Abstracts, 2016
The charge/discharge microstructural conditions that lead to mechanical failure, salt precipitation, and lithium dendrite formation in rechargeable lithium-ion batteries are explored. By starting from high resolution X-ray tomography, three-dimensional representations of porous microstructures from commercially batteries are used to simulate its local ...

Heterogeneous degradation in Li-ion batteries

2023
Li-ion batteries are crucial for the forthcoming energy transition. They are complex systems that show heterogeneous current distribution patterns and degradation. The development of valid methods to determine their internal state as well as for performance optimization and life cycle extension are vital for battery full deployment. We study the entropy
