Phytoplankton composition and microcystin concentrations in open and closed bays of Lake Victoria, Tanzania

open access: yesAquatic Ecosystem Health & Management, 2015
This study was carried out in order to investigate the spatial variation of algal toxin (microcystin) concentrations along the shoreline of Lake Victoria.

Maskless Fabrication of PLA‐Based Neural Arrays for CNS Recording and Stimulation

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Biodegradable neural interfaces enable bidirectional communication with the CNS. Through electrochemical characterization, ageing tests with impedance monitoring, and in vivo validation, we assess the performance of PLA‐based epicortical and spinal implants.

Data-driven modelling of coastal water quality dynamics

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science
Long-term coastal monitoring networks provide the opportunity to evaluate how water-quality predictability varies across contrasting coastal bays. However, most machine learning studies focused on individual stations, optically active variables or short ...

Protein Corona Formation on Soft Nanocarriers Under Biomimetic Circulatory Flow

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
A biomimetic venous circulation system is developed to study protein corona formation on soft nanocarriers under physiological shear. Liposomes, PLGA nanoparticles, and lipid‐polymer hybrid nanoparticles acquire largely shared but material‐dependent protein coronas that alter surface properties and suppress cellular uptake, highlighting the importance ...

Weight illusions explained by efficient coding based on correlated natural statistics

open access: yesCommunications Psychology
In our everyday experience, the sizes and weights of objects we encounter are strongly correlated. When objects are lifted, visual information about size can be combined with haptic feedback about weight, and a naive application of Bayes’ rule predicts ...

Imide Substitution Drives the Supramolecular Assembly of Perylene Diimide Into Laterally Modulated Metallic/Semiconducting Molecular Patterns

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Imide substitution with bulky 2,6‐isopropylphenyl groups induces perylene diimide to self‐assemble on Ag(111) into a monolayer with two coexisting adsorption heights. Molecules closer to the substrate gain metallic character due to charge transfer from the metal, while farther ones remain decoupled and semiconducting.

Estimating the Potential Production of the Brown Mussel Perna perna (Linnaeus, 1758) Reared in Three Tropical Bays by Different Methods of Condition Indices

open access: yes, 2015
Perna perna (Linnaeus, 1758) is the main marine bivalve mussel yielded commercially in Brazil. In spite of this, scientific data is very scarce regarding its productivity in tropical shallow waters.

Fabrication of Fibers With Complex Features Using Thermal Drawing of 3D‐Printed Preforms

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
3D printing enables rapid fabrication of macroscale polymer preforms with complex geometries. Thermal drawing then scales these structures into long fibers while preserving micron‐scale cross‐sectional features. This workflow provides a fast, low‐cost route to functional fibers with tailored geometries and material combinations for catheter, robotic ...

Muscle Control of an Extra Robotic Digit

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
This study compares muscle‐ and movement‐based control for operating a supernumerary robotic thumb. While movement control performs better in the proposed tasks, muscle‐based (EMG) control promotes broader motor learning. The results highlight the promise and challenges of using biosignals for human augmentation, offering new insights into intuitive ...
