Antarctic bdelloid rotifers: diversity, endemism and evolution [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Antarctica is an isolated continent whose conditions challenge the survival of living organisms. High levels of endemism are now known in many Antarctic organisms, including algae, tardigrades, nematodes and microarthropods.

Degenerate Tetraploidy Was Established Before Bdelloid Rotifer Families Diverged [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Rotifers of Class Bdelloidea are abundant freshwater invertebrates known for their remarkable ability to survive desiccation and their lack of males and meiosis.

Ice-inhabiting species of Bdelloidea Rotifera reveal a pre-Quaternary ancestry in the Arctic cryosphere. [PDF]

open access: yesBiol Lett
Historical climate data indicate that the Earth has passed through multiple geological periods with much warmer-than-present climates, including epochs of the Miocene (23–5.3 mya BP) with temperatures 3–4°C above present, and more recent interglacial stages of the Quaternary, for example, Marine Isotope Stage 11c (approx.

Plankton community responses in Pampean lowland streams linked to intensive agricultural pollution

open access: yesEcological Indicators, 2021
Lowland lotic ecosystems are under increasing pollution pressure. In this study, we analyzed the plankton community responses to environmental changes, including natural ones and those related to anthropogenic activities, to finally determine their ...

Rich freshwater rotifer fauna of small lentic ecosystems of south Andaman, Andaman Sea, India (Rotifera: Eurotatoria) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Small lentic ecosystems are hypothesized to be interesting habitats for metazoan diversity. This study is undertaken to document Rotifera of small freshwater bodies of south Andaman, India. A total of 11 2 species (S), belonging to 32 genera and

High-throughput sequencing and fatty acid profile analyses of the Black Amur bream (Megalobrama terminalis) reveal variation in dietary niche associated with geographic segregation. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
This study provides valued viewpoints for understanding the variations in feeding strategy and dietary niche among geographically segregated populations of Megalobrama terminalis. Our results can be used to develop conservation strategies and improve the fisheries management of Black Amur bream or other endemic fish species. Abstract Fish dietary niche

Rotifera of the Peruvian Andes: New Records and Insights

open access: yesDiversity
The Rotifera fauna of the Peruvian Andes remains significantly understudied, as evidenced by our findings from a limited sampling effort of 18 locations (15 samples from the Cusco region and three samples from Lake Titicaca). We identified 12 Monogononta

ParaHox Genes Revisited: From Gut Patterning to Integrated Axial and Neural Organization in Rotifera

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Zoology Part B: Molecular and Developmental Evolution, Volume 346, Issue 4, Page 357-369, June 2026.
In rotifers, ParaHox genes show a dispersed genomic organization, with Xlox absent across gnathiferans. Exclusive neuronal expression of Gsx and Cdx reveals that ancestral ParaHox genes coordinated neural and epithelial development beyond gut patterning, suggesting an integrated role in early bilaterian body plan organization.

Additions to the freshwater fauna of Heard Island [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
Freshwater collections from Heard Island yielded a fauna of protozoans, one species of platyhelminth, two species of tardigrades, at least four species of nematodes, 16 species of rotifer (including two new species and four new records for the island ...
