Beam steering with a metasurface

Science, 2019
Metasurfaces Metasurfaces have been designed that function as many passive optical elements. Shaltout et al. created a time-dependent active element. A frequency-comb light beam (a light source consisting of a broad range of evenly spaced wavelengths) interacted with a specially designed passive metasurface so that the beam could be rapidly (

Metamaterial lens for beam steering

2016 10th European Conference on Antennas and Propagation (EuCAP), 2016
A metamaterial-based lens, calculated using transformation optics concept, is designed using electric-LC resonators. A planar microstrip antenna source is used as transverse electric polarized wave launcher for the lens. Both the far field radiation patterns and the near-field distributions have been measured to experimentally demonstrate the beam ...

Beam steering in waveguide arrays

Applied Physics Letters, 2002
We demonstrate that highly efficient beam steering and switching can be achieved in thermo-optic waveguide arrays. For a given initial excitation, we find the position of the output field to depend on the transverse temperature gradient. By changing this gradient, we manage to steer the beam across the entire array.

Steering of directional sound beams

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2007
Apparatus is disclosed for steering a directional audio beam that is self-demodulated from an ultrasound carrier. The apparatus includes means for modulating a carrier signal with an audio signal and means for adjusting the amplitude and phase of at least one of the audio signal and/or the carrier signal to steer the audio beam to a desired direction ...

Phase shifter for antenna beam steering

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2016
Wide band Array Antenna operates in Ku-band (10.7-12.7 GHz) frequency composed of N×N radiating elements. This antenna aims at the reception of television satellite signals. The goal of this research is to provide better possibility of electronic beam control instead of manual or mechanical control, and design compact and low cost phase shifters to be ...

Dynamic Beam Steering With Reconfigurable Metagratings

IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation, 2020
Metagratings have recently shown promising features for wavefront manipulation, overcoming the efficiency limitations of gradient metasurfaces and their demanding fabrication requirements. Extreme functionalities, such as perfect anomalous reflection and refraction, focusing, and holography, have been proposed and tested. However, most of the developed

Beam-steering antennas at millimeter wavelengths

Proceedings of 2012 5th Global Symposium on Millimeter-Waves, 2012
In many emerging applications of millimeter waves, electronic focusing and beam steering is needed. We present a survey of mm-wave beam steering antennas, where the necessary phase change for antenna elements is achieved using various electronically tuneable elements, e.g.

Heterodyne Imaging and Beam Steering [PDF]

open access: possible, 2009
Heterodyne receiver coherently transfers the phase of optical wave into the phase of radio signal. This feature is essential for holography and adaptive optics – the fields where phase information is of primary importance. In addition, high sensitivity of the heterodyne receiver together with high angular resolution of optical systems determine such an

Advanced beam steering in helical drilling

International Congress on Applications of Lasers & Electro-Optics, 2009
Helical laser drilling is a method for producing high quality holes with defined geometries in different materials among industries such as aerospace, medical device manufacturing and electronics. If the aspect ratio of the hole is small, drilling can be done using a fast scanner.

Compound Scanning with an Electrically Steered Beam

Ultrasonic Imaging, 1981
Compound scanning using electronic steering of an array of transducers makes it possible to widen the area being explored and to increase the amount of information contained in an ultrasonic image. The principle and the operating characteristics of the method are described and its effectiveness demonstrated by in vitro and in vivo experiments ...
