Larval antibiosis to cabbage stem flea beetle (Psylliodes chrysocephala) is absent within oilseed rape (Brassica napus)

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
We screened a panel of 98 Brassicaceae genotypes (97 Brassica napus and 1 Sinapis alba) for cabbage stem flea beetle (Psylliodes chrysocephala) larval antibiosis. We found limited evidence for antibiosis across B. napus but consistent antibiosis in S. alba. Brassicaceae relatives may therefore better inform resistance traits for breeding.

Nutritional and biological value for natural canned meat of bearded seal Erignathus barbatus

open access: yesИзвестия ТИНРО
Nutritional and biological value is investigated for frozen and canned meat of bearded seal. The two types of canned products contained 84–88 % meat with addition of vegetable oil, onions, and spices and were sterilized using standard modes ensured ...

Presence and abundance of airborne Botryosphaeriaceae conidia are governed by temperature and season in the Okanagan Valley, Canada

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Presence and abundance of Botryosphaeria dieback inoculum were determined using spore trapping and droplet digital polymerase chain reaction in British Columbia, Canada. Highest inoculum was recorded in spring (April–June) and again in summer (July–September). These results suggest early pruning in December–January can mitigate pruning wound infections.

Few Annotations, High Accuracy: Transfer Learning and Data Augmentation Improve Passive Acoustic Monitoring of the Vulnerable African Manatee

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, EarlyView.
Can deep learning reliably detect a threatened species in passive acoustic monitoring with few annotations? Across 52 sites and 600 recording days, we compared two deep learning recognizers with the traditional machine learning Kaleidoscope for detecting African manatee vocalizations.

Engineering Flexible Nanofibrous Hydroxyapatite Scaffolds With Tunable Degradation and Mechanical Properties for Bone Regeneration

open access: yesSmall, EarlyView.
Conventional hydroxyapatite ceramics are brittle and poorly resorbable, limiting their use in bone repair. To overcome these limitations, flexible scaffolds are fabricated using ceramic nanofibers as structural building blocks. Adjusting nanofiber characteristics allows modulating the mechanical properties and degradation, providing a versatile ...

When aerial surveys won’t do:Grey seal pup production in cryptic habitats of Wales [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) are a species of conservation importance that require Marine Protected Area management and population status assessment under the EU Habitats and Species Directive. Aerial surveys are commonly used to monitor grey seal pup

Dual‐Component Spidroin‐Based Hydrogels: A Mechanically Tunable Platform for 2D and 3D Cell Culture

open access: yesSmall, EarlyView.
A dual‐component recombinant spider silk hydrogel platform was developed by combining NT2RepCT with a bioactive vitronectin‐functionalized spidroin domain. The hydrogels self‐assemble under physiological conditions, exhibit tunable mechanical properties, and support 2D and 3D cell culture, providing a versatile platform for mechanobiological studies ...
