On a New Type of Inverter-Induced Bearing Current in Large Drives with Oil-Lubricated Bearings

open access: yes2008 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting, 2008
We report on a new type of inverter-induced bearing current that can occur with large inverter-based drive systems with one journal bearing. This current is a variation of the "high-frequency circulating" bearing current type which has been described by different authors over the last years.

Induction Motor Bearing Currents - Causes and Damages

2021 28th International Workshop on Electric Drives: Improving Reliability of Electric Drives (IWED), 2021
Bearing damages make the biggest proportion of faults affecting AC electrical motors. There are various subdivisions of the bearing faults but one of them is the induced bearing and shaft currents in the machines. These currents cannot be fully avoided, yet with the development of power electronic control of the machines, the number of machines ...

Application guide bearing currents [PDF]

open access: possible, 2021
This application guide bearing currents is intended to provide an overview of electrical bearing current effects in rolling bearings, related to bearing damage, concerning the questions: - Which typical failures occur due to bearing currents? - What are electrical bearing currents? - How do electrical bearing currents occur?

Investigation of influence of bearing load and bearing temperature on EDM bearing currents

2010 IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition, 2010
To detect the worst case and the best case of the bearing operating conditions concerning the magnitude of the high frequency discharge bearing currents (“EDM currents”) and the frequency of electric discharges in the bearings of the small power inverter-fed AC motors, systematic investigations have been performed for three, 4-pole, 1.5 kW squirrel ...

Bearing wear caused by converter-induced bearing currents

IECON 2010 - 36th Annual Conference on IEEE Industrial Electronics Society, 2010
The basic interrelationships that are required to investigate the cross-system subject of “bearing currents in converter operation”, are discussed in this paper. In order to obtain an integrated overview of the situation, it is decisive that the main points of the investigation are not discussed individually, but must be considered from an overall ...

Bearing currents in converter operation

The XIX International Conference on Electrical Machines - ICEM 2010, 2010
The basic inter-relationships, which are required to investigate the cross-system subject of “bearing currents in converter operation”, are discussed in this paper. In order to obtain an integrated overview of the situation, it is decisive that the main points of investigation that are discussed are combined and viewed holistically.

On inverter induced bearing currents, bearing maintenance scheduling, and prognosis

2014 International Conference on Electrical Machines (ICEM), 2014
In this review we discuss the steps that are necessary to proceed from understanding the inception and evolution bearing faults, caused chiefly by bearing currents, and the advantages of the accurate estimation of the remaining useful life over fault detection.

Influence of bearing currents on the bearing lifetime for converter driven machines

2012 XXth International Conference on Electrical Machines, 2012
The possibility to calculate motor bearing currents from motor geometry and the mechanisms that lead to these currents are known today [1], [2]. The precise mechanical and electrical procedures which lead to the well known corrugated patterns, a “mountain/valley” structure in the bearing raceway, which reduces the bearing lifetime, are still unknown ...
