Design Considerations for Bearingless Rotary Pumps

Artificial Organs, 1997
Abstract: The designs of rotary blood pumps have shown substantial technical progress over recent years, especially contact bearing designs. However, the concern for potential thromboembolism remains and can only be eliminated by the use of bearingless pumps.

Novel bearingless centrifugal blood pump

4th IEEE International Conference on Power Electronics and Drive Systems. IEEE PEDS 2001 - Indonesia. Proceedings (Cat. No.01TH8594), 2005
A new directly-driven centrifugal blood pump has been designed and constructed. It is based on a special form of permanent magnet brushless DC motor whose rotor is combined with an impeller and encased in a sealed pump housing. To prevent potential thromboembolism and clotting, the rotor does not have any mechanical bearing. Instead, it is magnetically

The Bearingless 2-Level Motor

2007 7th International Conference on Power Electronics and Drive Systems, 2007
Several processes in chemical, pharmaceutical, biotechnology and semiconductor industry require contactless levitation and rotation through a hermetically closed chamber wall. This paper presents a novel concept that combines crucial advantages such as high acceleration capability, large air gap and a compact motor setup.

An analysis of bearingless AC motors

IEEE Transactions on Energy Conversion, 1994
Several types of AC bearingless motors are proposed. These bearingless motors have conventional four-pole stator windings and additional two-pole windings, whose currents produce radial forces acting on the rotor. General expressions of the machine inductances and radial forces are derived for the cylindrical rotor and salient-pole motors.

A novel bearingless switched reluctance motor

COMPEL - The international journal for computation and mathematics in electrical and electronic engineering, 2012
PurposeThis paper seeks to propose a novel bearingless switched reluctance motor (BSRM).Design/methodology/approachThe operating principle and structure characteristics of the proposed three‐phase 12/8‐pole BSRM is analyzed in detail. Finite element method‐based calculations are applied to a prototype and some important characteristics are obtained ...

Self-regulating composite bearingless wind turbine

Solar Energy, 1978
Abstract The Composite Bearingless Rotor (CBR) concept has been shown to have characteristics ideally suited for wind turbine applications. Originally developed for helicopters to reduce weight, costs and complexity, the CBR eliminates blade bearings and hinges through the utilization of the unique structural characteristics of uniaxial composite ...

Bearingless segment motor with Halbach magnet

SPEEDAM 2010, 2010
Today magnetically levitated rotors are mainly used in applications where wearless operation and high life cycle are of importance (e.g. in the pharmaceutical, biomedical, chemical and semiconductor industry). The bearingless slice motor features a very compact design because three degrees of freedom (one translational and two rotatory) are passively ...

Design Aspects of Bearingless Slice Motors

IEEE/ASME Transactions on Mechatronics, 2005
The complexity of a bearingless motor offers a multitude of freedoms in constructive design because different motor setups may have nearly the same dynamic behavior, and may differ only slightly in some operation characteristic. However, the mechanical setup often has a very strong impact on the power inverter topology and the volt-ampere requirements,
