The evolution of motor drive technologies. Development of bearingless motors
Proceedings IPEMC 2000. Third International Power Electronics and Motion Control Conference (IEEE Cat. No.00EX435), 2002Power electronics technologies have brought speed, power and new possibilities to motor drive systems. The ranges of power and speed of AC drives have expanded into the ranges that DC drives could nor reach. Electric machines which have new functions have been developed.

Radial force in a bearingless reluctance motor
IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, 1991A four-pole reluctance synchronous machine with additional two-pole windings was constructed. The additional winding currents produce the radial force to act as a magnetic bearing. Expressions for the machine inductance functions are given. Inductance functions with respect to the eccentric displacement of the rotor were measured.

Bearingless segment motor with Halbach magnet
SPEEDAM 2010, 2010Today magnetically levitated rotors are mainly used in applications where wearless operation and high life cycle are of importance (e.g. in the pharmaceutical, biomedical, chemical and semiconductor industry). The bearingless slice motor features a very compact design because three degrees of freedom (one translational and two rotatory) are passively ...

Design and Modeling of the Bearingless Induction Motor
2019 IEEE International Electric Machines & Drives Conference (IEMDC), 2019The bearingless version of the induction motor (IM) has seen little consideration as a high performance, medium to high power motor. This paper investigates and develops design and performance evaluation techniques that are necessary to systematically study and design the bearingless IM.

Introductory Analysis of the Bearingless Induction Motor
Solid State Phenomena, 2009The design and introductory calculations of a bearingless induction motor is presented in the paper. Advantages of bearingless motors are: the lack of a mechanical contact between the journal and the bush, small additional losses, no need of lubricants, no tear and wear, the shaft is shorter, they have low cost of production due to smaller number of ...

Survey of bearingless motor technologies and applications
2015 IEEE International Conference on Mechatronics and Automation (ICMA), 2015A bearingless motor is a motor with magnetically integrated bearing function. In the last two decades, extensive work has been done within bearingless motor research and development. This paper gives a comprehensive overview over published literatures regarding different motor types, bearing force and drive torque modelling, control problems and ...

High Stiffness Bearingless Motor
2019At LAI, a micro bearingless motor system is being developed, in collaboration with a Swiss company. The developed motor must support vibrations, axial and tilting loads. Given the millimetric scale of the motor, a proper bearing design is of paramount importance for reliable operation.
