Temperature and food sources influence subadult development and blood-feeding response of Culicoides obsoletus (sensu lato) under laboratory conditions

open access: yesParasites & Vectors, 2021
Background Culicoides obsoletus (s.l.) is the most abundant Culicoides species in northern Europe and an important vector of bluetongue virus and Schmallenberg virus.

A Pollen‐Enhanced Bionic Mechanoreceptor Induced by Asymmetric Ionic Convection in Hydrogel for Sensory‐Augmented Prostheses

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This work proposed a pollen‐enhanced bionic mechanoreceptor based on ionic convection. Leveraging the ion anchoring effect of the pollen particle, the output performance could be ∼12 times higher than the original state. By employing deep learning models as AI brains, the feasibility of a sensory‐augmented prosthesis consisting of a pollen‐enhanced ...

CMOS‐Integrated Synaptic Photoreceptor Chip Inspired by Insect Visual Processing

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
CMOS‐integrated Si QDs/ReS2 synaptic photoreceptor array mimics the parallel processing and wavelength‐selective strategy of insect vision. By combining intrinsic ultraviolet‐violet sensitivity with synaptic plasticity, the chip enables frontend sensory redundancy reduction without external filters, offering a scalable pathway toward lowpower ...

Genome-wide patterns of differentiation within and among U.S. commercial honey bee stocks

open access: yesBMC Genomics, 2020
Background The population genetics of U.S. honey bee stocks remain poorly characterized despite the agricultural importance of Apis mellifera as the major crop pollinator. Commercial and research-based breeding programs have made significant improvements

Blackawton bees [PDF]

open access: yesBiology Letters, 2010
Background Real science has the potential to not only amaze, but also transform the way one thinks of the world and oneself. This is because the process of science is little different from the deeply resonant, natural processes of play.

Advancing the Design of High‐Efficiency Printable Hole‐Conductor‐Free Mesoscopic Perovskite Solar Cells Through Machine Learning

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Based on the largest printable mesoscopic perovskite solar cells database we established, stacking model achieved precise PCE prediction (R2 = 0.73, MAE = 2.18%). Multiple experiments verified the accuracy of the model, which guided the fabrication of high‐PCE devices with an efficiency of 19.36%.

Simulation studies to optimize genomic selection in honey bees

open access: yesGenetics Selection Evolution, 2021
Background With the completion of a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) chip for honey bees, the technical basis of genomic selection is laid. However, for its application in practice, methods to estimate genomic breeding values need to be adapted to ...

On the Economics of US Agricultural Policy

open access: yesApplied Economic Perspectives and Policy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This paper presents an economic analysis of US agricultural policy, building on a modified version of Gardner's efficient redistribution. We argue that agricultural policy is motivated as an attempt to implement an efficient redistribution scheme that redistributes income toward farmers who, as a group, have been adversely affected by ...

Image-based honey bee larval viral and bacterial diagnosis using machine learning

open access: yesScientific Reports
Honey bees are essential pollinators of ecosystems and agriculture worldwide. With an estimated 50–80% of crops pollinated by honey bees, they generate approximately $20 billion annually in market value in the U.S. alone.
