Factors influencing begomovirus evolution and their increasing global significance: implications for sustainable control

open access: yes, 2006
Begomoviruses (Family Geminiviridae, Genus Begomovirus) have become the most destructive group of plant viruses in tropical and subtropical regions of the world.

Plant Virus‐Induced Inheritable Apoptosis Drives Reproductive Costs in Female Insect Vectors to Balance Viral Biparental Transmission

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 13, Issue 5, 27 January 2026.
Rice gall dwarf virus (RGDV), transmitted biparentally by leafhopper vector to their offspring, exploits the capsid protein to induce inheritable ovarian apoptosis via insulin‐driven PI3K/AKT/FoxO signaling axis. This mechanism enhances infection but reduces female reproductive fitness, causing inefficient maternal transmission.

Do stylet‐borne aphid‐transmitted viruses share the same binding sites?

open access: yesAnnals of Applied Biology, Volume 188, Issue 1, Page 87-101, January 2026.
Here, we tested if different stylet‐borne aphid‐transmitted viruses can compete for the same binding sites within the aphid stylets. We conducted sequential transmission assays of a potyvirus (ZYMV) followed by a cucumovirus (CMV) using Aphis gossypii as a vector and melon and pepper as test plants.

Complete Nucleotide Sequence of Watermelon Chlorotic Stunt Virus Originating from Oman

open access: yesViruses, 2012
Watermelon chlorotic stunt virus (WmCSV) is a bipartite begomovirus (genus Begomovirus, family Geminiviridae) that causes economic losses to cucurbits, particularly watermelon, across the ...

Molecular Characterization and Pathogenicity of Watermelon Isolates of Begomovirus cucurbitachinaense. [PDF]

open access: yesInt J Mol Sci
Squash leaf curl China virus (SLCCNV) belongs to the species Begomovirus cucurbitachinaense in the genus Begomovirus and can infect some Cucurbitaceae crops except for watermelon (Citrullus lanatus). In this study, watermelon plants showing symptoms typical to begomovirus infection in field were observed in Zhejiang Province of China, and SLCCNV ...

Identification and characterization of a cucumber accession resistant to tomato leaf curl New Delhi virus

open access: yesAnnals of Applied Biology, Volume 188, Issue 1, Page 182-194, January 2026.
Tomato leaf curl New Delhi virus (ToLCNDV) causes significant yield and fruit quality losses in cucurbit crops, particularly in the Mediterranean region. We identified a new source of resistance to ToLCNDV in cucumber (accession ABS.PE.045) and mapped resistance to four genomic intervals in chromosomes 1, 2, 6, and 7.

PCR‐Based Diagnosis of Cassava Mosaic Begomoviruses and DNA Satellites in Cassava Plants in Northern Ghana

open access: yesInternational Journal of Agronomy, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Cassava mosaic begomoviruses and DNA satellites are major threats to cassava production. In this study, 55 cassava farmers’ fields in Northern Ghana were randomly assessed for cassava mosaic disease (CMD) incidence, severity, adult whitefly counts, and cassava mosaic begomoviruses.
