A physics perspective on collective animal behavior
Physical Biology, 2022The dynamic patterns and coordinated motion displayed by groups of social animals are a beautiful example of self-organization in natural far-from-equilibrium systems.

Animal behavior and animal welfare
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, 1991Summary The value of behavioral techniques in assessing animal welfare, and in particular assessing the psychological well being of animals, is reviewed. Using cats and horses as examples, 3 behavioral methods are presented: (1) comparison of behavior patterns and time budgets; (2) choice tests; and (3) operant conditioning. The behaviors of intact and

The burgeoning reach of animal culture
Science, 2021We are not alone Before the mid-20th century, it was generally assumed that culture, behavior learned from others, was specific to humans. However, starting with identification in a few species, evidence that animals can learn and transmit behaviors has ...

The goal of this chapter is to describe the general strategies scientists use to measure behavior in rodents, invertebrates, and primates. First, we will discuss some of the issues a scientist must consider when choosing and performing behavioral assays. Then we will survey the behavioral assays that are the most commonly used in the literature.

Veterinary Clinics of North America: Small Animal Practice, 1991
Dogs and cats that are ill with febrile diseases usually are depressed and anorexic. When viewed from the standpoint of the wild ancestors, it is apparent that the behavior of sick animals is adaptive and not necessarily a reflection of debilitation. A wild animal that is acutely ill with an infectious disease often is at a life-or-death juncture, and ...

Veterinary Clinics of North America: Food Animal Practice, 1987
The behavior of the sick animal is not necessarily a result of physical debilitation; it can be viewed as part of a highly organized adaptive strategy that is at times critical to survival if the animal were living in the wild state. Domestic ruminants appear to have retained this behavioral mode when they are sick. This article brings together several

Animal Models of Ejaculatory Behavior
Current Pharmaceutical Design, 2005Premature ejaculation is generally regarded the most frequent male ejaculatory complaint and has been considered a psychosexual disorder with psychogenic aetiology. The efficacy of various antidepressants, however, to delay ejaculation in men and to pharmacologically treat premature ejaculation suggests a strong neurobiological involvement. Most of our

This paper will argue that understanding animal welfare and the individual vulnerability to stress-related disease requires a fundamental understanding of functional individual variation as it occurs in nature as well as the underlying neurobiology and ...

Behavioral Animation of Crowds
2007One of the important characteristics of behavioral animation is its ability to reduce the workload on the animators. This is achieved by letting a behavioral model automatically take care of the low-level details of the animation, freeing the animator to concentrate on the big picture.
