The Behavioral Immune System and Attitudes About Vaccines

Social Psychological and Personality Science, 2017
The present research utilized evolutionary theory to examine the relation between the behavioral immune system (i.e., disgust sensitivity) and attitudes about vaccines. The findings from the studies suggest that higher levels of dispositional disgust sensitivity is predictive of more negative attitudes toward vaccines.

Behavioral conditioning of the immune system

2002
Publisher Summary Both animal and human studies reveal that immune-system activity can be modulated by behavioral conditioning. Unconditioned stimuli (US) are pharmacological regulators of immune system activity, which are variously stimulatory or inhibitory to aspects of immune function.

Behavioral and Motivational Effects of Immune-System Activation

The Journal of General Psychology, 2002
Immune-system activity induces changes in animal behavior such as decreased food intake, decreased exploratory behavior, increased sleep, and impaired cognitive functioning. These changes are mediated by proinflammatory cytokines, and the administration of cytokines produces the same profile of behavior change as do infection and inflammation.

Emergent construction of behavior arbitration mechanism based on the immune system

1998 IEEE International Conference on Evolutionary Computation Proceedings. IEEE World Congress on Computational Intelligence (Cat. No.98TH8360), 1997
We have been investigating a new behavior arbitration mechanism based on the biological immune system. The behavior arbitration mechanism and the biological immune system share certain similarities since both systems deal with various sensory inputs (antigens) through interactions among multiple competence modules (lymphocytes and/or antibodies).

Passive Avoidance Behavior, Vasopressin and the Immune System

Neuroendocrinology, 2008
The relation between passive avoidance behavior and primary antibody response was studied in rats. The avoidance latency was varied by means of variation of the shock intensity during the learning trial; a higher shock intensity resulted in a longer avoidance latency at the retention test.

Immunoalienation

Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, 2001
Abstract: Immunoalienation denotes the process through which the definition of self, as defined by the immune system, progressively deviates from the genetically determined definition of self. The mechanisms responsible for immunoalienation are discussed in light of the available evidence.

Brain, behavior, and immunity: an interactive system.

Journal of the National Cancer Institute. Monographs, 1990
The immune, neuroendocrine, and central nervous systems are stimulus response systems that are similar in the functions they subserve and tightly integrated in their actions. The reciprocal regulatory effects of these systems provide a basis (but not proof) for the belief that brain-immune interactions are of clinical relevance and not reducible to ...

Psychiatric perspectives of brain, behavior, and the immune system.

Research publications - Association for Research in Nervous and Mental Disease, 1990
There is increasing evidence of reciprocal CNS-immune system interactions. The reaction of such processes to behavior and psychiatric disorders remains to be determined. It is not clear at this time if alterations in measures of the immune system associated with stress have clinical relevance, nor is there evidence that immune alterations are ...
