Behavioral inhibition: A neurobiological perspective
Current Psychiatry Reports, 2006Behavioral inhibition (BI) during early childhood has been associated with subsequent development of anxiety disorders. However, understanding of the neuroanatomical substrates of BI in humans generally has not kept pace with that of anxiety disorders. Recent interpretations and implementations of Gray's and Kagan's concepts of BI are examined from the

Behavioral Inhibition of Circadian Responses to Light
Journal of Biological Rhythms, 1992Circadian locomotor rhythms in rodents may be synchronized by either photic or nonphotic events that produce phase shifts of the rhythm. Little is known, however, about how these two types of stimuli interact to produce entrainment. The well-characterized circadian photic response of the golden hamster was examined in situations where a short light ...

Maternal anxiety, behavioral inhibition, and attachment
Attachment & Human Development, 2011In a community sample of mothers (N = 763), 46% rated their anxiety above a "normal" range compared with only 15% for depression. Mothers without a partner had significantly higher anxiety (but not depression) than those with a partner. In a subsample of intact families with 1-3 children and mothers selected for low, medium, or high anxiety levels (N =

The Journal of Social Psychology, 1989
Abstract A previous experiment in the United States and Australia found that students decreased the number of body movements, hand movements, and paralin-guistic vocalizations while in the passive presence of another person. This finding was replicated in both a laboratory study and a field setting.

Understanding Socially Inhibited Behaviors in Managers
Administration in Social Work, 1996The authors' purpose in this study is to define and highlight socially inhibited behaviors among managers, explore the implications of these behaviors for the workplace, identify ways to assist inordinately shy managers, and help staff to understand and relate more effectively when subjected to an inhibited manager.

Progesterone inhibition of aggressive behaviors in hamsters
Physiology & Behavior, 1987Effects of progesterone on aggressive behaviors were tested in male-male or female-female pairs of hamsters, after both members of the pair had received the same experimental treatment. In castrated males, progesterone increased the latency to attack, and decreased the frequency of attack and on-back fighting postures.

Caudate stimulation and behavioral inhibition in the rat
Brain Research, 1974Abstract The behavioral effects of various forms of caudate nuclear electrostimulation were studied in relation to their potency for inhibiting a well learned operant response. The major findings were: (1) The total amount of electrical energy per unit time delivered to the caudate nuclei proved to be an effective predictor of the degree of ...

The Physiology and Psychology of Behavioral Inhibition in Children
Child Development, 1987Longitudinal study of 2 cohorts of children selected in the second or third year of life to be extremely cautious and shy (inhibited) or fearless and outgoing (uninhibited) to unfamiliar events revealed preservation of these 2 behavioral qualities through the sixth year of life. Additionally, more of the inhibited children showed signs of activation in

Enhanced behavioral inhibition in restrained eaters
Eating Behaviors, 2011Lack of inhibitory control has been found to play a decisive role in disordered eating behavior. Behavioral and self-report measures show impulsive tendencies to even occur in non-clinical samples, e.g. restrained eaters. In restrained eaters, these traits interact with high reactivity to food-related cues leading to overeating.
