In situ 15N labelling of lupin below-ground biomass

Australian Journal of Agricultural Research, 1996
This paper describes the use of a cotton-wick method to enrich lupin plants with 15N. The method involved the insertion of a cotton thread through the stem and the submergence of the ends of the cotton thread in a solution of highly enriched 15N urea. The distribution of 15N in lupin plant components during pre-reproductive growth and pod filling.

Carbon sink potential and allocation in above- and below-ground biomass in willow coppice [PDF]

open access: possibleJournal of Forestry Research, 2020
This research estimates carbon sink and allocation in above- and below-ground biomass of a 12-year-old willow coppice plantation on fuvisol soil near the Vistula River (southern Poland). The plantation showed high C sink potential and sequestration rates. C sequestration by aboveground biomass was estimated at 10.8 Mg C ha−1 a−1. Accumulation in coarse

Reduction in below-ground biomass estimates from freezing of soil cores

Plant and Soil, 1989
Study was designed to quantify the effects of freezing soil cores prior to washing on estimates of below-ground biomass. Cores were extracted from nearly pure stands of 3 native grasses growing in a southern USA mixed-grass prairie. Estimates of crown + rhizome biomass in the top 10-cm of the soil profile did not differ as a function of pre-washing ...

Vertical distribution of below‐ground biomass in intensively grazed mesic grasslands

Journal of Vegetation Science, 1996
Abstract. Previous work has shown that below‐ground biomass is more concentrated in surface soil layers in intensively grazed mesic grasslands than in moderately grazed grasslands. However, since the mesic grasslands previously studied shared similar compositional traits, the question remained whether grasslands with differing species composition, and

Above- and below-ground biomass of mangroves in a sub-tropical estuary

Marine and Freshwater Research, 1998
Above- and below-ground biomass of five species of mangroves was estimated for the Mary River, south-eastern Queensland. Below-ground : above-ground biomass ratios of species in the upstream reaches ( Avicennia marina , Aegiceras corniculatum and Excoecaria agallocha ) averaged <0.5, and those of species in the saline conditions of the mouth ...

The influence of below ground herbivory and plant competition on growth and biomass allocation of purple loosestrife

Oecologia, 1997
Experiments investigating plant-herbivore interactions have primarily focused on above-ground herbivory, with occasional studies evaluating the effect of below-ground herbivores on plant performance. This study investigated the growth of the wetland perennial Lythrum salicaria (purple loosestrife) under three levels of root herbivory by the weevil ...

Below Ground Biomass of a Grassland Community of Rairangpur in the District of Mayurbhanj, Odisha

2015
The below ground biomass of a grassland community of Rairangpur (860 11' 45'' E ; 220 16' 45''N) in the district of Mayurbhanj, Odisha was studied following "Short term harvest method" as proposed by Odum [1]. The below ground biomass value of the experimental site was found to be maximum in the month of April (615.73 g m-2) and minimum in the month of

Ant-induced soil modification and its effect on plant below-ground biomass

Pedobiologia, 2005
Summary Lasius flavus is a dominant mound-building ant species of temperate grasslands that significantly modifies soil parameters. These modifications are usually the result of workers’ activities such as food accumulation and nest construction. An alternative hypothesis that could explain changes in soil is colony founding in areas of higher soil

Above- and below-ground biomass, and allometry, of four common northern Australian mangroves

Australian Journal of Botany, 2005
Mangrove forests are an integral part of tropical coastal ecosystems, particularly in northern Australia. In the Northern Territory, studies have determined the extent and species diversity of these associations but little is known of biomass or productivity.

Above-Ground and Below-Ground Biomass of the Herb Layer in Slovakia'S Forest Ecosystems

1991
ABSTRACT In this contribution the results of the total herb layer biomass (above-ground + below-ground) of the natural and seminatural forest ecosystems in Slovakia are presented. The basic values, total biomass (W T ), above-ground biomass (W A ), below ground biomass (W R ) and their mutual ratio (R B =W A /W R ) are as follows (in t.ha -1 , dry ...
