Noise levels and sources in the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary and the St. Lawrence River Estuary [PDF]
Although ambient (background) noise in the ocean is a topic that has been widely studied since pre-World War II, the effects of noise on marine organisms has only been a focus of concern for the last 25 years.

Scouting with drones to increase efficiency of locating wild pigs for removal
Our goal was to determine if locating wild pigs with thermal cameras mounted on unmanned aerial vehicle technology, drones, just prior to ground and aerial shooting efforts could increase removal rates of invasive wild pigs. Results suggest that scouting with drones can increase removal rates under a variety of conditions. Abstract Effective management

Timing is everything: Drivers of interannual variability in blue whale migration. [PDF]
Blue whales need to time their migration from their breeding grounds to their feeding grounds to avoid missing peak prey abundances, but the cues they use for this are unknown.

Predictions of southern migration timing in coastal sharks under future ocean warming
Abstract Projected redistribution of marine species due to ocean warming may undermine current conservation efforts. Yet, there have been few studies on how ocean warming may alter migration timing. Across 5 years of acoustic telemetry data (2018–2022), we determined environmental drivers of southward migration timing for 6 migratory shark species from

We present the first species‐specific epigenetic clock for common dolphins (Delphinus delphis), calibrated using dental ages from stranded and bycaught individuals. Despite concerns about dental ageing accuracy, our models showed strong performance and were unaffected by decomposition, supporting the use of post‐mortem samples for epigenetic clock ...

ABSTRACT The confluence of rivers with the ocean creates biological hotspots where temperature, salinity, and nutrients mix to provide excellent conditions for rearing, growth, and refuge to a multitude of organisms. Worldwide, estuaries are highly productive and biodiverse.

Historic and Current Use of Lower Cook Inlet, Alaska, by Belugas, Delphinapterus leucas [PDF]
Dedicated at-sea surveys for marine birds and mammals conducted in lower Cook Inlet in late July and early August from 1995–99 failed to locate any belugas, Delphinapterus leucas.

Aerodynamic Design of Buses Inspired by Beluga Whales
Abstract New bus designs inspired by the perfect streamlined body shapes of beluga whales are presented. The bodies are drawn using the UNIGRAPHICS program. The drag forces and the drag coefficients of variants of the new bus models are determined both experimentally and numerically.
