An overview of genetic relationships of Canadian and adjacent populations of belugas (Delphinapterus leucas) with emphasis on Baffin Bay and Canadian eastern Arctic populations

open access: yesNAMMCO Scientific Publications, 2002
Our current knowledge of the molecular genetics of High Arctic beluga (Delphinapterus leucas) populations (West Greenland, Lancaster Sound/Barrow Strait, Grise Fiord) and populations that are related (southeast Baffin, Beaufort Sea), is presented.

Beluga whales in the western Beaufort Sea : current state of knowledge on timing, distribution, habitat use and environmental drivers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
ECG was supported by a National Research Council-National Academy of Sciences Postdoctoral Fellowship. The seasonal and geographic patterns in the distribution, residency, and density of two populations (Chukchi and Beaufort) of beluga whales ...

Spatially explicit models of density improve estimates of Eastern Bering Sea beluga (Delphinapterus leucas) abundance and distribution from line-transect surveys [PDF]

open access: yesPeerJ
We investigate spatially explicit models and ensemble modeling techniques for estimating animal abundance from line-transect survey data. Spatially explicit models are expected to be statistically more efficient, resulting in more precise abundance ...

Beluga, Delphinapterus leucas, Habitat Associations in Cook Inlet, Alaska [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
A review of available information describing habitat associations for belugas, Delphinapterus leucas, in Cook Inlet was undertaken to complement population assessment surveys from 1993-2000.

The T‐Cell Response Mechanism in Human Papillomavirus‐Associated Cervical Cancer and New Strategies for Immunotherapy

open access: yesiNew Medicine, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a double‐stranded DNA virus that infects human skin and mucosal tissues exclusively. The German scientist Harald zur Hausen was awarded the 2008 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his discovery of the link between HPV infection and cervical cancer.

Visibility of St Lawrence belugas to aerial photography, estimated by direct observation

open access: yesNAMMCO Scientific Publications, 2002
The depleted population of belugas (Delphinapterus leucas) inhabiting the St Lawrence estuary, Canada, was monitored by periodic photographic aerial surveys. In order to correct counts made on aerial survey film and to obtain an estimate of the true size

Historic and Current Use of Lower Cook Inlet, Alaska, by Belugas, Delphinapterus leucas [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
Dedicated at-sea surveys for marine birds and mammals conducted in lower Cook Inlet in late July and early August from 1995–99 failed to locate any belugas, Delphinapterus leucas.

First Non‐Invasive Monitoring of Fecal Steroids in Greater Caribbean Manatees (Trichechus manatus manatus)

open access: yesZoo Biology, EarlyView.
This study established the first fecal hormonal reference values (P4/E2) for the Greater Caribbean manatee. Using non‐invasive ELISA, the authors found no significant differences between mature and immature females, highlighting that long‐term monitoring and ultrasounds are essential to fully understand their complex reproductive cycles.

Beluga whale body condition: evaluating environmental variables on beluga body condition indicators in the Tarium Niryutait MPA, Beaufort Sea

open access: yesArctic Science, 2023
The development of indicators as tools for ecosystem monitoring is a key step in the management of marine protected areas (MPAs). This study uses previously developed sex-specific body condition indices, blubber thickness, and girth, to assess temporal ...
