Novel methods of bender element test analysis

2015
The complexity of bender element test interpretation iswell documented. For example the arrival of a compressionalwave at the receiver clouds the arrival of the true shearwave. The wave diffuses while travelling through the sample as the received signal is of lower magnitude than the transmitted signal.

The importance of coupling and sample geometry in bender element testing

2015
ABSTRACT This paper presents a study aiming to improve the quality and repeatability of shear wave velocity measurements by means of the bender element (BE) technique. For this purpose, studies were carried out to improve the contact between the bender elements and the specimen, namely by the use of a BE puncher and/or the use of an ...

A comprehensive view of measuring soil stiffness with bender elements

2009
A laboratory experiment to determine the shear wave velocity of geomaterials by using bender elements has been reviewed. Problems associated with uniqueness and objectivity in judging correct arrival time and uniformity in interpretations are analyzed by using experimental results from a consolidation test on reconstituted clay samples.

The assessment of destructuration of bothkennar clay using bender elements

2006
Natural soft clays are structured' as a result of their history of deposition, cementing and aging. The natural clay possesses a higher void ratio and greater undrained strength than its reconstituted counterpart due to its structure, and thus exists outside the state boundary surface for the reconstituted material.
