Study of transmission properties for waveguide bends by use of a circular photonic crystal [PDF]
We study the transmission properties for the waveguide bends composed by a circular photonic crystal. Two types (Y and U type) of the waveguide bends utilizing the circular photonic crystal are studied. It has been shown, compared with the conventional photonic crystal waveguide bends, transmission properties for these bends can be significantly ...

Bind-and-bend model for DNA looping [PDF]
DNA looping is important in DNA condensation and regulation. One method for forming a DNA loop, thought to be used by the condensing agent protamine, is bind-and-bend. In bind-and-bend, molecules bind all along the DNA, each creating a bend in the DNA. Eventually, enough bending leads to the formation of a loop. Here, we adapt theory for DNA bending by

Transmission of Slow Light through Photonic Crystal Waveguide Bends [PDF]
The spectral dependence of a bending loss of cascaded 60-degree bends in photonic crystal (PhC) waveguides is explored in a slab-type silicon-on-insulator system. Ultra-low bending loss of (0.05+/-0.03)dB/bend is measured at wavelengths corresponding to the nearly dispersionless transmission regime.

In this issue of Structure, Ludtke et al. (2005) report the 9.6 Å structure of the ryanodine receptor (RyR1) closed state. The structure shows a bent inner helix and raises the question of whether inner helix deformation is really a conserved channel gating mechanism.

On the strain gradient bending deformations
Bending deformations are reviewed in the context of strain gradient linear elasticity, considering the complete set of strain gradient components. It is well understood that conventional bending deformations depend on the collective uniaxial extension of

Bogomol'nyi Decomposition for Vesicles of Arbitrary Genus
We apply the Bogomol'nyi technique, which is usually invoked in the study of solitons or models with topological invariants, to the case of elastic energy of vesicles.
