Head losses at manholes with a 90° bend

Canadian Journal of Civil Engineering, 1988
Head and pressure changes were studied at manholes with a 90° bend. For pressurized flow, such changes depend only on junction geometry. Among junction parameters, the benching was found particularly important. Full benchings reaching to the pipe crown produced the lowest head losses, particularly when combined with an enlarged pipe diameter at the ...

Bend loss in single-mode fibers

Journal of Lightwave Technology, 1997
In this paper, we present the results of extensive single-radius bend loss measurements for two different fibers over wide ranges of wavelength (800-1600 nm) and curvature radius (13.5-27.5 mm). A new bend loss formula is also derived, allowing a good fit of experimental data over the whole range of both parameters. Using an equivalent step-index (ESI)

Improving bending losses in holey fibers

OFC/NFOEC Technical Digest. Optical Fiber Communication Conference, 2005., 2005
Preliminary work has shown that the bending losses of large-mode-area holey fibers can be improved by modifying the hole configuration (Mortensen et al. (2003)). For the first time, we accurately quantify the advantages of this technique.

Determination of bending losses in rectangular waveguides

Journal of Lightwave Technology, 1998
This paper details an accurate method for computation of bending losses in rectangular optical waveguides which we combine with perturbation theory to account for the fields in the (outer) corner regions of the guiding channel. In the case of the weakly guiding channels of interest in optical signal processing, the correction to the loss coefficient ...

Pressure Losses in Smooth Pipe Bends

Journal of Basic Engineering, 1960
The results of extensive experimental studies to determine the pressure losses for turbulent flow in smooth pipe bends of circular cross section are presented in this paper. To make the data usable in practical design problems, the results are discussed in relation to those found by previous investigators, and empirical formulas for the bend-loss ...

Bend losses in drop inlet spillways

Canadian Journal of Civil Engineering, 1983
The drop inlet spillway consists of a vertical riser open at the top and connected to a horizontal conduit or tunnel at the bottom. A 90° change in direction is required at the connection between the riser and the conduit. In the interests of simplicity a square bend, sometimes called a miter bend, is often used for small unimportant structures.

Bending Losses of the Asymmetric Slab Waveguide

Bell System Technical Journal, 1971
The bending losses of the asymmetric slab waveguide are computed. The computation is based on the knowledge of the exact form of the solution of Maxwell's equations of the bent structure and the additional assumption that the field near the bent waveguide can be approximated by the field of the straight waveguide.
