Theoretical Parametric Study of the Relative Advantages of Winglets and Wing-Tip Extensions [PDF]

open access: yes
For identical increases in bending moment, a winglet provides a greater gain in induced efficiency than tip extension. Winglet toe angle allows design trades between efficiency and root moment. A winglet shows the greatest benefit when the wing loads are

Bending elasticity of macromolecules: analytic predictions from the wormlike chain model

open access: yes, 2013
We present a study of the bend angle distribution of semiflexible polymers of short and intermediate lengths within the wormlike chain model. This enables us to calculate the elastic response of a stiff molecule to a bending moment. Our results go beyond

Development of timber concrete composite (TCC) beam with post-tensioning [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Post-tensioning is a method of reinforcing (strengthening) concrete or other materials with high-strength steel strands or bars. The timber type that is used in all researches is the engineering timber products laminated veneer lumber (LVL) and glue ...

Rafting of Ni‐Based Superalloys Under Multiaxial Load as Understood by Phase‐Field Simulations and Critical Experiments

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Phase‐field simulations coupled with dislocation‐density‐based crystal plasticity modeling reproduce γ′ rafting behavior in single‐crystal Ni‐based superalloys under varied loading conditions. The model captures both macroscopic creep and microscopic morphology evolution, with results matching high‐temperature creep experiments.

An aerodynamic load criterion for airships [PDF]

open access: yes, 1975
A simple aerodynamic bending moment envelope is derived for conventionally shaped airships. This criterion is intended to be used, much like the Naval Architect's standard wave, for preliminary estimates of longitudinal strength requirements.

Understanding and Optimizing Li Substitution in P2‐Type Sodium Layered Oxides for Sodium‐Ion Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This work explores Li‐substituted P2 layered oxides for Na‐ion batteries by crystallographic and electrochemical studies. The effect of lithium on superstructure orderings, on phase transitions during synthesis and electrochemical cycling and on the interplay of O‐ versus TM‐redox is revealed via various advanced techniques, including semi‐simultaneous

3D (Bio) Printing Combined Fiber Fabrication Methods for Tissue Engineering Applications: Possibilities and Limitations

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Biofabrication aims at providing innovative technologies and tools for the fabrication of tissue‐like constructs for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine applications. By integrating multiple biofabrication technologies, such as 3D (bio) printing with fiber fabrication methods, it would be more realistic to reconstruct native tissue's ...

The influence of geometrical imperfection on the collapse behavior and ultimate bending capacity of ship box girder

open access: yesCurved and Layered Structures
This study investigates the ultimate bending moment of box girders within ship structures, dissecting the impact of geometrical parameters, initial imperfections, and the direction of bending moment.

Prediction of the wave induced second order vertical bending moment due to the variation of the ship side angle by using the quadratic strip theory

open access: yesInternational Journal of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, 2018
In this study, the second order bending moment induced by sea waves is calculated using the quadratic strip theory. The theory has the fluid forcing terms including the quadratic terms of the hydrodynamic forces and the Froude–Krylov forces.
