Performance of a steel spar wind turbine blade on the Mod-0 100 kW experimental wind turbine [PDF]

open access: yes
The performance and loading of a large wind rotor, 38.4 m in diameter and composed of two low-cost steel spar blades were examined. Two blades were fabricated at Lewis Research Center and successfully operated on the Mod-0 wind turbine at Plum Brook. The

How wing compliance drives the efficiency of self-propelled flapping flyers

open access: yes, 2010
Wing flexibility governs the flying performance of flapping wing flyers. Here, we use a self-propelled flapping-wing model mounted on a ``merry go round'' to investigate the effect of wing compliance on the propulsive efficiency of the system.

Natural Bone‐Derived Ceramic Scaffolds Functionalized with Chitosan‐Gold, Chitosan‐Magnesium, and Chitosan‐Zinc for Enhanced Antibacterial Activity

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study reports the development of antibacterial ceramic scaffolds derived from natural bovine bone. The bones were processed through sequential boiling and hydrogen peroxide treatment to remove organic matter, producing porous, mineral‐rich scaffolds.

Suns-V$_\textrm{OC}$ characteristics of high performance kesterite solar cells

open access: yes, 2014
Low open circuit voltage ($V_{OC}$) has been recognized as the number one problem in the current generation of Cu$_{2}$ZnSn(Se,S)$_{4}$ (CZTSSe) solar cells. We report high light intensity and low temperature Suns-$V_{OC}$ measurement in high performance

PERFORMANCE OF THE CAPSTONE C30 MICROTURBINE ON BIODIESEL BENDS. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
This report will describe the tests of biodiesel blends as a fuel in a Capstone oil fired microturbine (C30) with a nominal rating of 30 kW. The blends, in ASTM No. 2 heating oil, ranged from 0% to 100% biodiesel. No changes were made to the microturbine system for operation on the blends.

Understanding and Optimizing Li Substitution in P2‐Type Sodium Layered Oxides for Sodium‐Ion Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This work explores Li‐substituted P2 layered oxides for Na‐ion batteries by crystallographic and electrochemical studies. The effect of lithium on superstructure orderings, on phase transitions during synthesis and electrochemical cycling and on the interplay of O‐ versus TM‐redox is revealed via various advanced techniques, including semi‐simultaneous
