Understanding marine biodiversity patterns and drivers: The fall of Icarus

open access: yesMarine Ecology, EarlyView.
Abstract Biodiversity patterns are fundamental in our understanding of the distribution of life, ecosystem function, and conservation. In this concept analysis, A survey of the existing knowledge on marine biodiversity patterns and drivers across latitudes, longitudes, and depths indicates that none of the postulated patterns represent a rule.

Benthic Habitats and the Effects of Fishing

2005
Abstract. The recent increase in interest about effects of trawling and dredging on seafloor ecosystems and their fisheries can be understood by examining three phases in the history of conservation thinking. The primary focus in nonmarine conservation thinking and management worldwide is on maintaining

A review of approaches for classifying benthic habitats and evaluating habitat quality

Journal of Environmental Management, 2004
We have assessed the current state of knowledge relative to methods used in assessing sub-tidal benthic habitat quality and the classification of benthic habitats. While our main focus is on marine habitat, we extensively draw on knowledge gained in freshwater systems where benthic assessment procedures are at an advanced stage of maturity.
