Integrating multibeam echosounder water-column data into benthic habitat mapping
<p>Kelp forests worldwide are under ever increasing pressure from anthropogenic impacts including kelp harvesting, pollution, and higher sea surface temperatures due to climate change. Marine spatial planning requires accurate mapping of these habitat types to inform effective policy.

Bottom-grab samplers have long been the standard to describe nearshore marine habitats both qualitatively and quantitively. However, sediment samplers are designed to collect specific grain sizes and therefore have biases toward those sediments. Here, we

Benthic habitat mapping: A review of three decades of mapping biological patterns on the seafloor
What is benthic habitat mapping, how is it accomplished, and how has that changed over time? We query the published literature to answer these questions and synthesize the results quantitatively to provide a comprehensive review of the field over the past three decades. Categories of benthic habitat maps are differentiated unambiguously by the response

Techniques for spatial analysis and visualization of benthic mapping data: final report [PDF]
The mapping and geospatial analysis of benthic environments are multidisciplinary tasks that have become more accessible in recent years because of advances in technology and cost reductions in survey systems.

Coral reefs are the most biodiverse marine ecosystems, and host a wide range of taxonomic diversity in a complex spatial community structure. Existing coral reef survey methods struggle to accurately capture the taxonomic detail within the complex ...

Abstract The Pleistocene is a key period for understanding the evolutionary history and palaeobiogeography of the European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus). The species was first documented in southeastern Iberia at the beginning of the Middle Pleistocene and appears to have rapidly spread throughout Southwestern Europe, where it was found in numerous ...

A new musculoskeletal reconstruction and revision of the cranio‐mandibular anatomy of the Devonian arthrodire placoderm Dunkleosteus terrelli from a comparative and functional anatomical perspective. Dunkleosteus is a specialized arthrodire with many specializations for feeding on large vertebrates, and many of its features are part of broader ...

How Much Shallow Coral Habitat Is There on the Great Barrier Reef?
Australia’s Great Barrier Reef (GBR) is a globally unique and precious national resource; however, the geomorphic and benthic composition and the extent of coral habitat per reef are greatly understudied.

Abstract Despite the distinctly different shapes of their tongues, the tongue gross anatomy of Saimaa ringed seal closely resembled that of Baltic ringed seal. There were no differences in the extrinsic and intrinsic tongue muscles or their associated vascularization and innervation between Saimaa and Baltic ringed seals.
