Overwintering of Freshwater Benthic Macroinvertebrates
1991Although temperature has long been recognized as a key variable in aquatic ecosystems, the consequences of freezing have received relatively little attention. At high elevations and latitudes, ice formation is a major variable affecting differential survival of organisms and hence the abundance and community composition of freshwater organisms. Ice may

Acute bioassays with benthic macroinvertebrates conducted in situ
Bulletin of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology, 1989Several methods of toxicity testing using macroinvertebrates in controlled laboratory experiments have been reported. Researchers conducted bioassays with natural assemblages of benthic macroinvertebrates exposed to several petroleum refinery effluents. They found that the populations of invertebrates declined after only a few days of exposure.

A Method for Tagging Individual Benthic Macroinvertebrates
Journal of the North American Benthological Society, 1989An inexpensive and reliable method for marking individual benthic macroinvertebrates was developed using hand-crafted 2 × 3-mm plastic tags attached with readily available cyanoacrylate instant glue. Pteronarcys stoneflies retained tags for 6 mo in a circular laboratory stream tank, and up to 81 d under field conditions in a turbulent Rocky Mountain ...

Effects of Diflubenzuron on Benthic Macroinvertebrates in Littoral Enclosures
Archives of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology, 1996Two applications of the insect growth regulator diflubenzuron were made to replicate littoral enclosures at nominal concentrations of 0.7, 2.5, 7.0, and 30 &mgr;g/L. Assessment of the effects of this insecticide on benthic macroinvertebrate community structure was accomplished by measuring changes in abundance and taxonomic richness.

Responses of stream benthic macroinvertebrates to fire
Forest Ecology and Management, 2003Synthesis of published research on the responses of stream benthic macroinvertebrates to fire in western United States indicates a consistent pattern of response that can guide resource management and future research. Direct effects of fire generally are minor or indiscernible.

Variation between Technicians Sorting Benthic Macroinvertebrate Samples
Freshwater Invertebrate Biology, 1984After identification and enumeration, specimens sorted from 18 benthic macroinvertebrate samples by two technicians were returned to corresponding sample residue. Unknown to technicians, the samples were remixed and relabeled with new collection dates and then sorted as if newly collected. By chance, 13 samples were sorted by both technicians.
