Changes in invertebrate assemblage composition in benthic and hyporheic zones during a severe supraseasonal drought [PDF]
Droughts are unpredictable disturbances characterized in streams by declining flow, reduced habitat availability, and deteriorating abiotic conditions.

Faunal response to benthic and hyporheic sedimentation varies with direction of vertical hydrological exchange [PDF]
1. Sedimentation and clogging of benthic and hyporheic zone substrates is increasingly being recognised as one of the greatest threats to the ecological integrity of riverine ecosystems globally. This ex-situ study examined the influence of sedimentation

Benthic phosphorus cycling in the Peruvian oxygen minimum zone [PDF]
Abstract. Oxygen minimum zones (OMZs) that impinge on continental margins favor the release of phosphorus (P) from the sediments to the water column, enhancing primary productivity and the maintenance or expansion of low-oxygen waters. A comprehensive field program in the Peruvian OMZ was undertaken to identify the sources of benthic P at six stations,

Paleoecology of the Maastrichtian and Danian sediment at North of Central Alborz, Iran, based on Planktonic foraminifera [PDF]
In order to study the fossil contents of the Ziarat-kola section for biostratigraphical purposes the 212 meters was sampled at Central Alborz. The sequence is mainly made up of monotonous grey- green to light grey marl.

Benthic iron and phosphorus fluxes across the Peruvian oxygen minimum zone [PDF]
Benthic fluxes of dissolved ferrous iron (Fe2+) and phosphate (TPO4) were quantified by in situ benthic chamber incubations and pore‐water profiles along a depth transect (11°S, 80‐1000 m) across the Peruvian oxygen minimum zone (OMZ). Bottom‐water O2 levels were < 2 µmol L−1 down to 500‐m water depth, and increased to ∼ 40 µmol L−1 at 1000 m.

The littoral zones around archipelagos are highly productive coastal habitats that serve as biodiversity hotspots and provide valuable ecosystem services that are different from those of the pelagic and profundal zones.

The role of benthic foraminifera in the benthic nitrogen cycle of the Peruvian oxygen minimum zone [PDF]
Abstract. The discovery that foraminifera are able to use nitrate instead of oxygen as energy source for their metabolism has challenged our understanding of nitrogen cycling in the ocean. It was evident before that only prokaryotes and fungi are able to denitrify.

Biodiversity, community structure and function of biofilms in stream ecosystems [PDF]
Multi-species, surface-attached biofilms often dominate microbial life in streams and rivers, where they contribute substantially to biogeochemical processes.

In a close future, Mediterranean rivers will support strong disturbances due to climate changes, with inexorable consequences for their fauna. The invertebrate biodiversity of the Cèze River (South of France) was studied in a karstic area.
