We discuss the case of a 49 year old man who was admitted to the emergency department with acute heart failure. He suffered from severe alcoholism and malnutrition. His heart failure was of the high output type and the diagnosis beriberi, a disease caused by thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency.

Thiamine Concentration in Human Milk Is Correlated With Maternal and Infant Thiamine Status: A Cross‐Sectional Analysis of the Lao Thiamine Study

Thiamine status of breastfed infants < 6 months of age is correlated with human milk thiamine concentration, which in turn is strongly correlated with maternal thiamine status in northern Lao PDR. Improving maternal thiamine status is important for the health and wellbeing of both mother and infant.

Summary We systematically assessed evidence of overweight and obesity prevalence, and possible determinants, in people who experience incarceration globally. We searched Embase, Medline, and Cochrane databases. Overweight and obesity proportions were pooled into a meta‐analysis and compared with national prevalences.
