Yes, Friendship and Love Can Be Bought and Sold

open access: yesJournal of Applied Philosophy, Volume 43, Issue 2, Page 549-569, May 2026.
ABSTRACT Can friendship and love be bought and sold? I argue yes, contrary to philosophical consensus. The prevailing view rests on the common error of over‐reliance on idealized conceptions of friendship and love that bear little resemblance to actual relationships.

Updates, Examples and Validation of the Global Ionosphere Thermosphere Model

open access: yesSpace Weather, Volume 24, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abstract This study provides an updated description, example simulations, and validation of the Global Ionosphere Thermosphere Model (GITM). The updates to GITM include using an exothermic semi‐implicit chemistry scheme that no longer requires an altitude dependent heating efficiency; an ionospheric wind‐driven dynamo; improved neutral, ion, and ...

Sugar provisioning increases parasitoid numbers in agroecosystems but may not reduce pest densities: A meta‐analysis

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 63, Issue 5, May 2026.
Our findings demonstrate that providing sugar sources reliably supports parasitoid populations and parasitism rate but does not systematically translate into improved pest suppression or yield gains. These results suggest that, for economic and practical reasons, sugar inputs at the edge of cultivated fields should be favoured.

The Red Queen unveils the sexual and mating strategies of flowers

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 114, Issue 5, May 2026.
Although the conventional wisdom is that floral traits of plants evolved in concert with their mutualistic pollinators, here we showed that several key sexual and mating traits of plants, which modulate their outcrossing strategy, evolved in response to the pressure exerted by their antagonistic insect herbivores.

When risk does not discount: Flood history and rising property valuations

open access: yesReal Estate Economics, Volume 54, Issue 3, Page 586-623, May 2026.
Abstract We study how expanded flood disclosure requirements affect real estate markets and appraisals in South Carolina. Counterintuitively, more comprehensive flood disclosures cause home prices to increase in tracts with a history of significant flooding.

Incorporation of Cryptic Plasmid Energetics Improves Genome‐Scale Metabolic Predictions in Probiotic E. coli Nissle 1917

open access: yesMicrobial Biotechnology, Volume 19, Issue 5, May 2026.
This study presents the expansion of genome‐scale models of Escherichia coli Nissle 1917 to account for the metabolic cost of its cryptic plasmids. Through systematic comparison with previous reconstructions and validation against fluxomics datasets, the models improved accuracy in predicting growth and overall metabolic fluxes.
