Sarcoidosis: Epidemiology and clinical insights

open access: yesJournal of Internal Medicine, Volume 293, Issue 6, Page 668-680, June 2023., 2023
Abstract Sarcoidosis is characterized by noncaseating granulomas which form in almost any part of the body, primarily in the lungs and/or thoracic lymph nodes. Environmental exposures in genetically susceptible individuals are believed to cause sarcoidosis. There is variation in incidence and prevalence by region and race.

Poor Outcome and Mortality in Patients with Lower Lung‐Dominant Sarcoidosis

open access: yesCanadian Respiratory Journal, Volume 2023, Issue 1, 2023., 2023
Background. Pulmonary sarcoidosis predominantly affects the upper lung zones but sometimes affects the lower lung zones. We hypothesised that patients with lower lung zone‐dominant sarcoidosis had lower baseline forced vital capacity, progressive restrictive lung function decline, and higher long‐term mortality. Methods.

Long Used but Hardly Known: Synthesis and Crystal Structure of Tritium Breeding Li2Be2O3. [PDF]

open access: yesChemistry
The ternary oxide Li2Be2O3 was synthesized in a HT approach starting from Li2O and BeO using a radiofrequency furnace. Although, the compound has been known for almost 60 years, its crystal structure has only now been elucidated and a phase‐pure synthesis makes the determination of directly assignable properties possible.

Exertional Dyspnea Incidentally Diagnosed as Sarcoidosis: A Teaching Hospital Experience

open access: yesCase Reports in Pulmonology, Volume 2023, Issue 1, 2023., 2023
Background. Sarcoidosis is a complex disease with nonspecific etiology and clinical presentation. Its diagnosis is often delayed due to the absence of a single specific investigation modality. A multidisciplinary approach is necessary for its diagnosis. Report.

A Rare Case Diagnosed by Videothoracoscopic Lung Biopsy: Diffuse Pulmonary Meningotheliomatosis

open access: yesCase Reports in Pulmonology, Volume 2021, Issue 1, 2021., 2021
Diffuse pulmonary meningotheliomatosis (DPM) is reported as a diffuse parenchymal lung disease characterized by disseminating small asymptomatic nodules. These lesions are often detected incidentally as microscopic findings in lung specimens or autopsies examined by a pathologist.

Sinonasal Sarcoidosis: A Scoping Review of Demographics, Clinical Presentation, and Outcomes. [PDF]

open access: yesLaryngoscope Investig Otolaryngol
This study reviews the presentation, treatment, and outcomes of sinonasal sarcoidosis. Sinonasal sarcoidosis predominantly affects female patients with or without a history of systemic sarcoidosis who present with prolonged nasal obstruction. Most patients have symptomatic improvement with conservative management; however, a select subset of patients ...

Potential Health Impacts, Treatments, and Countermeasures of Martian Dust on Future Human Space Exploration. [PDF]

open access: yesGeohealth
Abstract The challenges of human space exploration produce some of humanity's greatest technological and scientific advances, not excluding innovations in medicine. The microgravity environment causes a host of physiological changes, and exposure to dust on the Moon caused considerable pulmonary distress to astronauts during the Apollo missions. As the

Multivalent ions and biomolecules: Attempting a comprehensive perspective

open access: yesChemPhysChem, Volume 21, Issue 16, Page 1742-1767, August 18, 2020., 2020
Ions play an important role for a large variety of biological processes. Compared to monovalent ions, the effects of multivalent ions are often qualitatively different and can include complex phenomena such as charge inversion and precipitation of macromolecules.
