[Biosynthesis of beta-endorphin].

We have demonstrated that beta-lipotropin is a precursor molecule and that during its maturation, it gives rise to beta-endorphin. This model is similar to proinsulin, proparathyroid hormone and proglucagon models. Since beta-endorphin is also found in the hypothalamus, one can foresee that its biosynthesis will be similar if not identical.

Human acid-acetone placental powder (PP) has corticotrophin-like and beta-endorphin(beta-EP)-like activity. In a beta-EP radioimmunoassay the PP showed a potency of 4.82 ng/mg protein. In Sephadex G-75 filtration and high pressure liquid chromatography, the beta-EP-like activity of PP was found in the corresponding chromatographic fractions as standard

Uber die Funktion von beta-Endorphin (b-E) im Liquor besteht bislang Unklarheit. Nach intracerebraler Injektion zeigt das als “korpereigenes Opiat” bezeichnete b-E bei Tieren eine hohe analgetische Wirksamkeit. Naloxon ist nicht nur ein Morphin- sondern auch ein b-E-An-tagonist.

[Maternal beta-endorphin secretion during pregnancy--measurement of immunoreactive beta-endorphin in urine].

Gestational variations in maternal beta-endorphin (beta-end) secretion were investigated by simultaneous measurements of plasma and urinary immunoreactive beta-endorphin (ir-beta-end).
