The genus Betula consists of 40–60 species of deciduous trees and shrubs, distributed in the cooler parts of Europe, Asia, and North America. Most species are extremely hardy, some grow at the far north around the Arctic Circle, where they form the northern treeline.

Za listove Betule pendule karakteristične sastavnice su flavonoidni spojevi- metodom tankoslojne kromatografije dokazana je prisutnost rutina, hiperozida i kvercitrina. Sadržaj ukupnih flavonoida je određen spektrofotometrijski te iznosi 0.89% izraženo na kvercetin, odnosno 1.44% izraženo na hiperozid.
