Re-reconsidering Burt: Beyond a reasonable doubt

The Burt controversy has taken a number of strange twists and turns, leading many observers to conclude that he has been exonerated of the accusation that he fabricated his data on monozygotic twins reared apart. A comparison of his twin sample with that from other well documented studies, however, leaves little doubt that he committed fraud.

Number Theory has some of the flavour of an experimental science. Numerical calculations may be used to gather evidence in favour of (or against) conjectures, and may in fact lead to the formulation of new conjectures. Computers provide the mathematician with an efficient tool for gathering this evidence. But you have to be careful.
