Mortality of the oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis, during pupation in insect pest suppressive soils

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, Volume 170, Issue 7, Page 565-572, July 2022., 2022
Oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis (Diptera: Tephritidae), is an important worldwide crop pest. Little is known about the role of soil‐entomopathogens in mortality during pupation. We assessed the effects of standard potting soil, sterilized sand, and soil amended with beneficials (such as four fungal taxa and a nematode), separately and combined.

Strength and consistency of density dependence in marine fish productivity

open access: yesFish and Fisheries, Volume 23, Issue 4, Page 812-828, July 2022., 2022
Abstract The correct prediction of the shape and strength of density dependence in productivity is key to predicting future stock development and providing the best possible long‐term fisheries management advice. Here, we identify unbiased estimators of the relationship between somatic growth, recruitment and density, and apply these to 80 stocks in ...

How water‐soluble saccharides drive the metabolism of lactic acid bacteria during fermentation of brewers' spent grain

open access: yesMicrobial Biotechnology, Volume 15, Issue 3, Page 915-930, March 2022., 2022
Metabolic effect of short‐term exposures of lactic acid bacteria to environmental pressure induced by brewers' spent grain (BSG)‐derived saccharides. Summary We proposed a novel phenomic approach to track the effect of short‐term exposures of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum and Leuconostoc pseudomesenteroides to environmental pressure induced by brewers'

Interdependence between lignocellulosic biomasses, enzymatic hydrolysis and yeast cell factories in biorefineries

open access: yesMicrobial Biotechnology, Volume 15, Issue 3, Page 985-995, March 2022., 2022
In this review the main highlighted topics are the interdependence of the processing of the lignocellulosic biomasses, predominantly by enzymes, and the selection of microbial strains. Because there are good data available, yeast(s) and biofuels were used as models, but the concepts are applicable to other microbes and other products.

Agricultural commodity price dynamics and their determinants: A comprehensive econometric approach

open access: yesJournal of Forecasting, Volume 40, Issue 7, Page 1245-1273, November 2021., 2021
Abstract We present a comprehensive modelling framework aimed at quantifying the response of agricultural commodity prices to changes in their potential determinants. The problem of model uncertainty is assessed explicitly by concentrating on specification selection based on the quality of short‐term out‐of‐sample forecasts (1 to 12 months ahead) for ...

A transcriptomic, metabolomic and cellular approach to the physiological adaptation of tomato fruit to high temperature

open access: yesPlant, Cell &Environment, Volume 44, Issue 7, Page 2211-2229, July 2021., 2021
Abstract High temperatures can negatively influence plant growth and development. Besides yield, the effects of heat stress on fruit quality traits remain poorly characterised. In tomato, insights into how fruits regulate cellular metabolism in response to heat stress could contribute to the development of heat‐tolerant varieties, without detrimental ...

Improved genome assembly and pan‐genome provide key insights into eggplant domestication and breeding

open access: yesThe Plant Journal, Volume 107, Issue 2, Page 579-596, July 2021., 2021
Summary Eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) is an important horticultural crop and one of the most widely grown vegetables from the Solanaceae family. It was domesticated from a wild, prickly progenitor carrying small, round, non‐anthocyanic fruits. We obtained a novel, highly contiguous genome assembly of the eggplant ‘67/3’ reference line, by Hi‐C ...
