This paper analyses the uncertainty in the estimation of shape from motion and stereo. It is shown that there are computational limitations of a statistical nature that previously have not been recognized. Because there is noise in all the input parameters, we cannot avoid bias.

Designs for Minimum Bias Estimation
Technometrics, 1988Minimum bias estimation was suggested as an alternative to least squares for polynomial tits by Karson. Manson, and Hader (1969). To use this alternative, a combination of least squares estimates of coefficients of the model order fitted, and of the additional model order whose bias is being guarded against, needs to be calculated.

Bias and Stability of Multiplier Estimates
The Review of Economics and Statistics, 1989A number of analytical contributions have given sufficient conditions under which Leontief multiplier estimates are biased. This paper uses empirical data and a Monte Carlo framework to evaluate the problem of bias and obtains the opposite conclusions. For practical purposes, it appears that linear multiplier estimates are unbiased.

'Bias reduction of maximum likelihood estimates'
Biometrika, 1993SUMMARY It is shown how, in regular parametric problems, the first-order term is removed from the asymptotic bias of maximum likelihood estimates by a suitable modification of the score function. In exponential families with canonical parameterization the effect is to penalize the likelihood by the Jeffreys invariant prior. In binomial logistic models,

Estimation of Bias in Proteome Research
2003This chapter focuses on statistical analysis of large-scale yeast two-hybrid (Y2H) experiments compared with the data on protein-protein interactions obtained by single Y2H experiments in traditional laboratory setups. Reports on protein-protein interactions from large-scale experiments differ qualitatively from results obtained in traditional setups ...
