Investigation on shear strain of reinforced concrete membrane panels subjected to pure shear

open access: yesAdvances in Mechanical Engineering, 2019
Hsu recently conducted a shear test on nine reinforced concrete panel elements subjected to applying pure shear using a shear testing device. Modern truss models (i.e.

Robot‐Assisted Doppler Optical Coherence Tomography for Intraoperative Evaluation of Microvascular Anastomoses

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
This work presents a robot‐assisted Doppler optical coherence tomography system for autonomous, wide‐field intraoperative assessment of microvascular anastomoses. Machine‐vision–guided probe positioning and adaptive scan planning enable three‐dimensional structural and hemodynamic imaging over extended vessel segments.

Variation of stress in virtual biaxial compression test of ice rubble

open access: yes, 2017
Ice rubble constitutes ice ridges and rubble fields, which can exert high loads on offshore structures. To characterize the ice rubble, its average properties are often desired. The properties, such as, the critical state friction angle, rely on the continuum notion of stress. This study uses discrete element model for the ice rubble. We use an average

Failure characteristics and the energy criterion of rock with a through‐going joint under true‐triaxial unloading conditions: Insights from the DEM model

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
The rock failure mode is significantly influenced by the contributing factors, such as the joint inclination, the initial confining pressure, and the unloading point. We found six typical rock failure modes after a large number of numerical tests. Abstract Excavation unloading damages rock masses, with preferential failure along geological defects in ...

Critical expansion points: Mechanical signs of surrounding rock instability

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
This study proposes the Rock Bearing‐Expansion Model (RockBEM) with critical expansion points (CEPs) to quantify post‐peak damage stages in deep‐buried rock masses via plane strain compression test (PSCT). CEP hysteresis&interval ratios reveal bearing performance dynamics and failure severity, advancing mechanistic insights into deep underground rock ...

Advancing mine pillar design: Evaluating traditional methods and integrating AI for enhanced stability of pillars in the Great Dyke, Zimbabwe

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
B1 is bord width 1, B2 is bord width 2, L is the pillar length, W is the pillar width, red color and letter A represent the pillars, and white color and number 1 represent excavated areas. Pstress is the average pillar stress; σv is the vertical component of the virgin stress, MPa; and e is the areal extraction ratio. e = B o B o + B P ${\rm{e}}=\frac{{

A proposed generalized constitutive equation for nonlinear para-isotropic materials [PDF]

open access: yes
Finite element models of varying complexities were used to solve problems in solid mechanics. Particular emphasis was given to concrete which is nonisotropic at any level of deformation and is also nonlinear in terms of stress-strain ...

Achievement of Transition Metal Chalcogenides/Oxides in Hydrogen Production by Seawater Electrolysis

open access: yesEcoEnergy, EarlyView.
Transition metal chalcogenides (TMCs)/oxides have shown great application potential in seawater splitting for hydrogen generation due to their adjustable electronic properties, abundant active sites, and excellent catalytic performance. ABSTRACT Under the impetus of global “dual carbon” goals, green hydrogen has become a key component of the future ...

Textural behavior of gels formed by rice starch and whey protein isolate: Concentration and crosshead velocities

open access: yesCiência e Agrotecnologia
Fabricated food gels involving the use of hydrocolloids are gaining polpularity as confectionery/convenience foods. Starch is commonly combined with a hydrocolloid (protein our polyssacharides), particularly in the food industry, since native starches ...
