Omics of bifidobacteria: research and insights into their health-promoting activities.

Biochemical Journal, 2017
Members of the genus Bifidobacterium include gut commensals that are particularly abundant among the microbial communities residing in the gut of healthy breast-fed infants, where their presence has been linked to many beneficial host effects.

Effect of bifidobacteria on nitrites and nitrosamines

Letters in Applied Microbiology, 1995
The effects of six different bifidobacteria strains were studied on two procarcinogens: nitrite and nitrosamines. Growth of bifidobacteria was not affected by nitrite concentrations below 50 mumol l-1. At nitrite concentrations greater than 2000 mumol l-1, total growth inhibition was observed.

Prebiotic Galactooligosaccharide Metabolism by Probiotic Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria.

Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 2017
Galactooligosaccharides (GOS) are bifidogenic and lactogenic prebiotics; however, GOS utilization is strain-dependent. In this study, commercially available bifidobacteria and lactobacilli probiotic strains were evaluated for growth in the presence of ...

Bifidobacteria exert species-specific effects on constipation in BALB/c mice.

Food & Function, 2017
Constipation is one of the most common gastrointestinal complaints worldwide. The aim of this study was to determine whether edible bifidobacteria (Bifidobacterium longum, B. infantis, B. animalis, B. bifidum, B. adolescentis or B.

The Molecular Biology of Bifidobacteria

1999
Bacteria belonging to the genus Bifidobacterium are amongst the most abundant species of the human and animal intestinal microflora and consequently, can play a fundamental role in the ecology of the gastrointestinal tract in both health and disease. However, attempts to improve the characteristics of bifidobacteria for practical applications, and gain
