OPPORTUNISTIC SURVEILLANCE OF CAPTIVE AND FREE-RANGING BIGHORN SHEEP (OVIS CANADENSIS) IN COLORADO, USA, FOR TRANSMISSIBLE SPONGIFORM ENCEPHALOPATHIES

open access: yesJournal of Wildlife Diseases, 2021
: Bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) are predicted to have a degree of susceptibility to the transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSE) chronic wasting disease and scrapie.

Shared Bacterial and Viral Respiratory Agents in Bighorn Sheep (Ovis canadensis), Domestic Sheep (Ovis aries), and Goats (Capra hircus) in Montana

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine International, 2011
Transmission of infectious agents from livestock reservoirs has been hypothesized to cause respiratory disease outbreaks in bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis), and land management policies intended to limit this transmission have proven controversial.

Hemorrhagic Disease in Bighorn Sheep in Arizona [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Wildlife Diseases, 2002
Two bighorn sheep from Arizona (USA) were submitted for necropsy. One was a Rocky Mountain bighorn (Ovis canadensis canadensis) and the other was a desert bighorn (Ovis canadensis mexicana). Both had lesions consistent with those of hemorrhagic disease (HD).

Sharp gene pool transition in a population affected by phenotype-based selective hunting

open access: yes, 2005
We use a microscopic model of population dynamics, a modified version of the well known Penna model, to study some aspects of microevolution. This research is motivated by recent reports on the effect of selective hunting on the gene pool of bighorn ...

HELMINTH PARASITES OF BIGHORN SHEEP IN OREGON [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Wildlife Diseases, 1977
The lungs and gastrointestinal tracts from 18 hunter-killed bighorn rams (Ovis canadensis californiana) were examined in total or in part for helminth parasites during a two-year study of three separate herds in Eastern Oregon. Prevalence was 100% with the lungworm Protostrongylus stilesi.

Puma predation on radiocollared and uncollared bighorn sheep

open access: yesBMC Research Notes, 2009
Background We used Global Positioning System (GPS) data from radiocollared pumas (Puma concolor) to identify kill sites of pumas preying upon an endangered population of bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) in southern California.

Direct and indirect effects of cougar predation on bighorn sheep fitness.

open access: yesEcology
Predation has direct effects on prey population dynamics through mortality, and it can induce indirect effects through fear. The indirect effects of predation have been documented experimentally, but few studies have quantified them in nature so that ...

Elaeophorosis in Bighorn Sheep in New Mexico [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Wildlife Diseases, 1999
Two bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) in New Mexico (USA) were found to be naturally infected with Elaeophora schneideri. An adult ram examined in 1997 in the Fra Cristobal Mountains had 26 nematodes in the carotid and iliac arteries, and microfilariae were present in the skin, nasal mucosa, brain, and lungs.

Cougar Dispersal and Natal Homing in a Desert Environment

open access: yes, 2018
We present a review of cougar dispersal literature and the first evidence of natural (i.e., unmanipulated) homing behavior by a dispersing male cougar (Puma concolor) that sustained severe injuries crossing the northern Mojave Desert.
