Environmental Impacts of Mountain Biking: Science Review and Best Practices [PDF]
Mountain biking is still a relatively new activity whose environmental impact and contribution to trail degradation is poorly understood. As with all recreational pursuits, it is clear that mountain biking contributes some degree of environmental ...

We hypothesized that bighorn sheep ewes with chronic nasal Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae carriage are the source of infection that results in fatal lamb pneumonia. We tested this hypothesis in captive bighorn ewes at two study facilities over a 5-year period,

Background The construction of genetic linkage maps in free-living populations is a promising tool for the study of evolution. However, such maps are rare because it is difficult to develop both wild pedigrees and corresponding sets of molecular markers ...

Use of exposure history to identify patterns of immunity to pneumonia in bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis). [PDF]
Individual host immune responses to infectious agents drive epidemic behavior and are therefore central to understanding and controlling infectious diseases.

Estimating wild bee population size with validated distance sampling
Distance Sampling is a promising method to estimate population size but has never been validated on insects. We validated it on a honey bee population of known size. We applied Distance Sampling to three insular pollinators and found that estimates are consistent across days, match species phenology and reflect the expected influence of weather ...

Age and spatial behavior determine survival of male elk during the hunting season
We sought to investigate factors that influenced survival of male elk in Montana, USA, during the hunting season using 4 years of movement, age, and survival data. Our findings demonstrate that use of security attributes are the result of behavioral and demographic mechanisms with some age‐based nuances.

Assessing senescence patterns in populations of large mammals [PDF]
Theoretical models such as those of Gompertz and Weibull are commonly used to study senescence in survival for humans and laboratory or captive animals.

Increased heterozygosity and allele variants are seen in Texel compared to Suffolk sheep [PDF]
In this study, the Suffolk and Texel sheep breeds were compared for microsatellite marker heterozygosity throughout seven chromosomal regions in the sheep genome.
