Bilateral symmetry estimation of human face
International Journal on Interactive Design and Manufacturing (IJIDeM), 2012This paper proposes a new method for the identification of the symmetry plane of the human face, working from 3D high-density scanned data. The method being proposed is an original variant of a typical mirroring and registration method. This method is validated by analysing some specifically designed test cases.

Measuring bilateral symmetry in digital images
Proceedings of Digital Processing Applications (TENCON '96), 2002An important example of bilateral symmetry in nature is the approximate bilateral symmetry exhibited by humans. Detecting and measuring bilateral symmetry in medical images should provide benefits in a clinical environment. This paper presents a method for detecting the dominant plane of bilateral symmetry in an image of arbitrary dimension and ...

Generation of bilateral symmetry in Anthozoa: A model
Journal of Theoretical Biology, 2007Polyps of Anthozoa usually display bilateral symmetry with respect to their mouth opening, to their pharynx, and in particular to the arrangement of their mesenteries. Mesenteries, which are endodermal folds running from the apical to the basal end of the body, subdivide the gastric cavity into pouches. They form in a bilateral symmetric sequence.

Perception, 1997
Palmer and Hemenway (1978 Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance4 691–702) reported that shapes with multiple axes of symmetry are processed faster than those with single symmetry even when trials are blocked so that the subject knows that any symmetry axis will be vertical.
