The Immune Microenvironment: New Therapeutic Implications in Organ Fibrosis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This review summarizes recent advances in understanding the immune microenvironment's role in fibrosis, focusing on phenotypic/functional alterations of immune cells and their dynamic interactions with other cellular constituents within tissues. The authors further explore therapeutic opportunities and challenges in targeting immune microenvironment ...

BRD4 Signaling Maintains the Differentiated State of β Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The comprehensive exploration revealed the critical role of BRD4 in β cells. BRD4 plays a fundamental role in maintaining β cell differentiation because both long‐term and acute BRD4 deficiency result in a reduction in insulin secretion and downregulation of differentiation markers.

The NADPH oxidase NOX4 regulates redox and metabolic homeostasis preventing HCC progression

open access: yesHepatology, EarlyView., 2022
Loss of NOX4 in HCC tumor cells induces metabolic reprogramming in a Nrf2/MYC‐dependent manner to promote HCC progression. Abstract Background and Aims The NADPH oxidase NOX4 plays a tumor‐suppressor function in HCC. Silencing NOX4 confers higher proliferative and migratory capacity to HCC cells and increases their in vivo tumorigenic potential in ...

A history of gastrectomy is a risk factor for choledocholithiasis in patients undergoing cholecystectomy: A single center retrospective study

open access: yesAnnals of Gastroenterological Surgery, EarlyView.
This retrospective study suggests that gastrectomy is a risk factor for choledocholithiasis. Especially in terms of the differences in reconstruction methods, the median time from gastrectomy to development of choledocholithiasis was 5.5 years for Roux‐en‐Y, which was significantly faster than 20 years for Billroth I and 35 years for Billroth II ...

Mitochondrial stress in advanced fibrosis and cirrhosis associated with chronic hepatitis B, chronic hepatitis C, or nonalcoholic steatohepatitis

open access: yesHepatology, EarlyView., 2022
Adaptive mitochondrial mechanisms allow mitochondrial resilience and prevent the worsening of fibrosis, while deregulation of these mechanisms promotes the progression from no/minimal‐mild (F0‐F2) fibrosis to advanced fibrosis and cirrhosis (F3‐F4). Abstract Background and Aims Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection causes oxidative stress (OS) and alters ...

Comparison between olanexidine gluconate and conventional antiseptics for surgical site infection in gastroenterological surgery: A meta‐analysis

open access: yesAnnals of Gastroenterological Surgery, EarlyView.
This meta‐analysis compared olanexidine gluconate (OLG) with conventional antiseptics on surgical site infections (SSIs) in gastroenterological surgery. OLG significantly reduced overall SSIs without statistical heterogeneity. Abstract Aim To compare the preventative effect of the new antiseptic olanexidine gluconate (OLG) with conventional antiseptics
