Induction of Peroxisomal β‐Oxidation as a Critical Mechanism for Ethanol‐Induced Hepatic Triglyceride Accumulation

open access: yesFASEB BioAdvances, EarlyView.
Prolonged fasting and fibrate treatment induce peroxisomal β‐oxidation and lead to excessive generation of hydrogen peroxide, which stimulates ethanol metabolism and significantly increases the formation of acetaldehyde; further oxidation of acetaldehyde into acetate remarkably elevates the mitochondrial ratio of NADH/NAD+ and causes feedback ...

Is Deuterium Sequestering by Reactive Carbon Atoms an Important Mechanism to Reduce Deuterium Content in Biological Water?

open access: yesFASEB BioAdvances, EarlyView.
Deuterium, a heavy isotope of hydrogen, is universal in nature, but it disrupts the mitochondrial ATPase pumps. One mechanism that biological organisms may use to reduce deuterium levels in the mitochondria is to sequester deuterium bound to carbon atoms in a small set of organic molecules that have a unique configuration to support such trapping ...

Association Between Metabolic Dysfunction and Gallstone Disease in U.S. Adults: An Analysis of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey

open access: yesJournal of Digestive Diseases, EarlyView.
We revealed a robust association between gallstone disease and a cluster of metabolic disorders, including obesity, non‐alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), diabetes mellitus, and hypertension. This association was consistently observed across sensitivity analyses and was especially evident in younger individuals and females.
