Apsidal Motion in Close Binaries
2000Tidal effects in close binaries are well known as an important source of information on stellar interiors. Such information can also be obtained for a single star if it pulsates, like radial or non-radial pulsating stars. In the last thirty years many different models for the structure and evolution of the stars have been performed.

The evolution of a star depends primarily on its mass, chemical composition, so it is important to know the distribution of stellar masses when the stars are born. Stars can be born as singles, in pairs, or in multiple systems. A large fraction of the stars belongs to binary systems.

The structure of close binaries
Astrophysics and Space Science, 1978A method for calculating the structure of a close binary component is presented. It is seen that the effect of binary distortion is to shift the zero age main sequence to the right. Attempts to construct contact systems with these models confirm the results of earlier workers that this is not possible.

Research on close binary systems has continued at a high level during the past triennium, although the rate of growth is noticeably slower - probably reflecting the cutbacks in funds to which many of us are subject.
