Apsidal Motion in Close Binaries

2000
Tidal effects in close binaries are well known as an important source of information on stellar interiors. Such information can also be obtained for a single star if it pulsates, like radial or non-radial pulsating stars. In the last thirty years many different models for the structure and evolution of the stars have been performed.

Evolution of Close Binaries

2001
The evolution of a star depends primarily on its mass, chemical composition, so it is important to know the distribution of stellar masses when the stars are born. Stars can be born as singles, in pairs, or in multiple systems. A large fraction of the stars belongs to binary systems.

Supernovae in close binaries

Astrophysics and Space Science, 1974
The impact of a supernova shell onto 2.82M⊙ and 20.0M⊙ main-sequence stars is investigated for various initial orbital separations, and various supernova shell masses and velocities. The inelastic collision between the star and the supernova shell, the shock propagation into the companion star, and other forms of momentum transfer such as the rocket ...

Close Binary Stars

1994
At the time of this report in September 1993, about a year before the next General Assembly in 1994, the membership of Commission 42 stands at 357, an increase of forty-two members since the time of the last report prepared in September 1990. This is an increase of more than 10 percent, indicating the continuing vitality of our Commission in ...

Dynamics of Close Binaries

1978
In the second chapter of this volume we have investigated the ways in which axial rotation, or the proximity of another star, will influence the equilibrium figures of the components of close binary systems; and in subsequent two chapters we extended our investigation to consider the effects of dynamical tides, or of nonuniform rotation. The aim of the

Binary Opening and Closing

2009
Besides the two primary operations of erosion and dilation, there are two secondary operations that play key roles in morphological image processing, these being opening and its dual, closing. We focus mostly on opening, the properties of closing usually being analogous via complementation.

The structure of close binaries

Astrophysics and Space Science, 1978
A method for calculating the structure of a close binary component is presented. It is seen that the effect of binary distortion is to shift the zero age main sequence to the right. Attempts to construct contact systems with these models confirm the results of earlier workers that this is not possible.

Close Binary Stars

1977
Commission 42 convened for two business meetings and two scientific sessions. In the following, the minutes of the business meetings and a summary of the scientific meetings are presented, with the abstracts of some of the papers read.

Close Binary Stars

1985
Research on close binary systems has continued at a high level during the past triennium, although the rate of growth is noticeably slower - probably reflecting the cutbacks in funds to which many of us are subject. There have also been changes of emphasis within the field, which are commented on in the pages that follow.
