The spectroscopic study of astrometric binaries
Astrophysics and Space Science, 1985The spectroscopic observations of several astrometric binaries, obtained by the author during the past 20 years, are described. Main emphasis is placed on the determination of orbital elements of visual binaries, and the detection of unseen companions.

Spectroscopic Binaries in the Halo
International Astronomical Union Colloquium, 1992AbstractFor almost 1500 stars in the Carney-Latham survey of proper-motion stars we have accumulated about 20,000 precise radial velocities. Already we have orbital solutions for more than 150 spectroscopic binaries in this sample, and about 100 additional binary candidates with variable velocity.

The Spectroscopic Binary HD189178
Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, 1982Orbital elements for the primary component of HD 189178B5 are presented for the first time, although the star has been known for 70 years to he a binary. Velocities derived from all lines visible in the spectrum lead to values for the elements P = 70d.22, T = JD2439762.1, ω = 302° e = 0.34, V0 - 20.1 km s-1, K1 = 41.4 km s-1, and fm = 0.43.

The masses of spectroscopic binaries
Vistas in Astronomy, 1956Abstract The problems involved in the determination of masses of the components of spectroscopic binaries are discussed. Attention is paid both to methods which yield individual masses, and to statistical methods applicable where individual masses cannot be calculated because only one spectrum is observed or because the orbital inclination is unknown.
