The First Decade of Gravitational-Wave Measurements of Black Hole Spins

open access: yesGalaxies
A decade after the first direct detection of gravitational waves, the growing catalog of hundreds of confirmed events is revealing new insights into the spins of stellar-mass black holes. Spin measurements have long been heralded as a promising tracer of

Deep Learning–Based Extraction of Promising Material Groups and Common Features from High‐Dimensional Data: A Case of Optical Spectra of Inorganic Crystals

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Discovery, EarlyView.
We report a novel interpretation method for deep learning models based on feature extraction and clustering. Applying this method to an atomistic line graph neural network (ALIGNN) model trained on optical absorption spectra of 2,681 inorganic compounds obtained from first‐principles calculations, we successfully identify key factors underlying ...

Black Hole-Neutron Star Binaries

open access: yes
The gravitational wave signals of black hole-neutron star (BHNS) binary systems have now been detected, and future detections might be accompanied by electromagnetic counterparts. BHNS mergers involve much of the same physics as binary neutron star mergers: strong gravity, nuclear density matter, neutrino radiation, and magnetic turbulence.

In Situ Contact Angle Measurement for Autonomous Spin Coating in Self‐Driving Labs

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Discovery, EarlyView.
A vision‐based add‐on transforms commercial spin coaters into autonomous modules of Self‐Driving Labs. Combining a width‐scaled U‐Net with classical geometric analysis, the system simultaneously measures contact angles and estimates substrate pose using a single camera.

Exploiting Ferroelectric and Spintronic Dynamics for Neural Network Computation

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
Ferroelectric and spintronic devices, relying on the control of polarization and magnetization, offer intrinsically fast, durable, energy‐efficient, and low‐latency building blocks for analog in‐memory computing. The hysteretic dynamics of an order parameter are leveraged to provide nonvolatile, multistate memory and nonlinear switching. Brain‐inspired

Electromagnetic Signatures of Supermassive Binary Black Holes: Synchrotron, Self-lensing Flares, and Jet Precession

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
The recent evidence for a nanohertz gravitational-wave background from pulsar timing arrays highlights the urgent need to identify electromagnetic counterparts to supermassive binary black holes.

Hierarchical Membrane for Photoelectrostatically Gated Monovalent‐Divalent Ion Separation

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie International Edition, EarlyView.
We report a hierarchical poly(ionic liquid)–carbon nitride membrane supported on anodic alumina for efficient monovalent/divalent ion separation. Confined nanochannels and tailored interfacial ion interactions enable exceptional K+/Mg2+ ( > 500) and Li+/Mg2+ ( > 200) selectivities, offering a promising strategy for advanced aqueous ion separations ...
