The Problem of Evil Remains Logically Binding

open access: yesReligions, 2021
Most contemporary discussions of the problem of evil assume that “logical” formulations of the problem are untenable, and that we should operate with “evidential” formulations instead. I argue that this consensus is founded on a mistake and that there is

The Binding Problem 2.0: Beyond Perceptual Features

open access: yesCognitive Science, 2022
AbstractThe “binding problem” has been a central question in vision science for some 30 years: When encoding multiple objects or maintaining them in working memory, how are we able to represent the correspondence between a specific feature and its corresponding object correctly?

BINET: an algorithm for solving the binding problem

open access: yesProceedings of 7th International Conference on VLSI Design, 2002
In this paper we present BINET (BInding using NETwork flows), a heuristic for solving the binding problem which occurs in high-level synthesis of digital systems. BINET is derived from an ILP formulation by mapping the binding problem for each time step onto a network optimization problem which can be optimally solved in polynomial time.

Harmony Theory and Binding Problem

open access: yes, 1999
We introduce a neural network architecture based on Smolensky’s Harmony Theory in order to solve a particular form of Binding Problem in a visual scene containing 4 subpatterns. The network performance is studied through computer simulations. The results obtained evidence how Harmony Theory can be used to solve Binding Problem, but its performance ...

Toward a further understanding of object feature binding: a cognitive neuroscience perspective. [PDF]

open access: yes
The aim of this thesis is to lead to a further understanding of the neural mechanisms underlying object feature binding in the human brain. The focus is on information processing and integration in the visual system and visual shortterm memory.

The Binding Problem after an eye movement. [PDF]

open access: yesAtten Percept Psychophys, 2020
Spatial attention is thought to be the "glue" that binds features together (e.g., Treisman & Gelade, 1980, Psychology, 12[1], 97-136)-but attention is dynamic, constantly moving across multiple goals and locations. For example, when a person moves her eyes, visual inputs that are coded relative to the eyes (retinotopic) must be rapidly updated to ...

A Dynamic Mechanistic Model of Perceptual Binding

open access: yesMathematics, 2022
The brain’s ability to create a unified conscious representation of an object by integrating information from multiple perception pathways is called perceptual binding. Binding is crucial for normal cognitive function.

Heteroclinic networks for brain dynamics

open access: yesFrontiers in Network Physiology, 2023
Heteroclinic networks are a mathematical concept in dynamic systems theory that is suited to describe metastable states and switching events in brain dynamics.

The Identity-Location Binding Problem [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Vision, 2014
AbstractThe binding problem is fundamental to visual perception. It is the problem of associating an object's visual properties with itself and not with some other object. The problem is made particular difficult because different properties of an object, such as its color, shape, size, and motion, are often processed independently, sometimes in ...

Characterisation of Bombyx mori odorant-binding proteins reveals that a general odorant-binding protein discriminates between sex pheromone components [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
In many insect species, odorant-binding proteins (OBPs) are thought to be responsible for the transport of pheromones and other semiochemicals across the sensillum lymph to the olfactory receptors (ORs) within the antennal sensilla.
