Assessing the utility of autonomous recording units and spring point counts for monitoring abundance of ruffed grouse Bonasa umbellus

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
The ruffed grouse Bonasa umbellus is a species of conservation concern that has declined across most of its range. At the southeastern trailing edge of the range in Georgia, grouse are restricted to elevations 600 m a.s.l. and abundance is relatively low.

What is the impact of diabetes mellitus on radiation induced acute proctitis after radical radiotherapy for adenocarcinoma prostate? A prospective longitudinal study

open access: yesClinical and Translational Radiation Oncology, 2019
Background: Long-term complications of diabetes include cardiovascular disease, retinopathy, nephropathy, and neuropathy. Diabetic patients with prostate cancer could be at a high risk of radiation-induced acute proctitis following radical radiotherapy ...

Heating up parasitoid–host interactions: High temperature increased mortality of late‐instar braconid larvae and reduced ladybird recovery rate

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract With ongoing climate change, temperature‐dependent outcomes of host–parasitoid interactions can affect ecosystem functioning and key ecosystem services such as biological control. However, most studies addressing the impacts of temperature on host–parasitoid systems are

Pascal type properties of Betti numbers

open access: yesInternational Journal of Mathematics and Mathematical Sciences, 1994
In this paper, we will describe the Pascal Type properties of Betti numbers of ideals associated to n-gons. These are quite similar to the properties enjoyed by the Pascal's Triangle, concerning the binomial coefficients. By definition, the Betti numbers

Seasonal body mass dynamics mediate life‐history trade‐offs in a hibernating mammal

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
We tested a suite of ecological hypotheses to explain variation in seasonal body mass dynamics of a fat‐storing mammalian hibernator. We further demonstrated that pre‐hibernation mass gain in ground squirrels mediates an annual allocation trade‐off between current and future reproduction as the squirrels forage and rear young under predation risk ...

Vog: Using Volcanic Eruptions to Estimate the Health Costs of Particulates

open access: yesThe Economic Journal, EarlyView., 2018
The negative consequences of long‐term exposure to particulate pollution are well established but a number of studies find no effect of short‐term exposure on health outcomes. The high correlation of industrial pollutants complicates the estimation of the impact of individual pollutants on health.

Some results on special binomial ideals

open access: yesLe Matematiche, 2006
The main goal of this paper is to characterize a particular class of ideals whose structure can still be interpreted directly from their generators: binomial ideals having a finite number of binomials generators in a polynomial ring k[x] = k[x_1 ...

Trade‐offs across life history stages and social association types shape winter communal roosting in a long‐lived raptor

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
Our study demonstrates how life history trade‐offs and pair bonds influence winter roosting in red kites. Analysing long‐term GPS data from 216 individuals, we reveal marked behavioural plasticity in communal roosting: young, non‐breeding males are most likely to join communal roosts, whereas breeding pairs predominantly roost together near their ...
