Bioacoustic Baselines for Intact Forests

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 32, Issue 5, May 2026.
The Soundscape Baselines Project is a global initiative to collect and analyse bioacoustic baselines in the world's remaining intact forests. The baseline data are collected using a modular system of passive acoustic monitoring and ancillary data that can be expanded and integrated with other technologies.

The Development of SONAR as a Tool in Marine Biological Research in the Twentieth Century

open access: yesInternational Journal of Oceanography, Volume 2013, Issue 1, 2013., 2013
The development of acoustic methods for measuring depths and ranges in the ocean environment began in the second decade of the twentieth century. The two world wars and the “Cold War” produced three eras of rapid technological development in the field of acoustic oceanography. By the mid‐1920s, researchers had identified echoes from fish, Gadus morhua,

Optimization of passive acoustic bird surveys: a global assessment of BirdNET settings

open access: yesIbis, Volume 168, Issue 2, Page 785-798, April 2026.
BirdNET is a popular machine learning tool for automated recognition of bird sounds. However, evidence on how to optimize its settings for accurate bird monitoring remains limited. Here, we evaluate how BirdNET settings influence model performance in identifying bird vocalizations and characterizing bird communities, using 4224 1‐min recordings from 67

Bioacoustic investigations and taxonomic considerations on the Cicadetta montana species complex (Homoptera: Cicadoidea: Tibicinidae)

open access: yesAnais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências, 2004
Recent bioacoustic investigations have shown that Cicadetta montana Scopoli 1772 is a complex of morphologically similar sister species that are best characterized by their song patterns. At the type locality of C.

A computational framework to characterize and compare the tonal repertoires of toothed whales

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 7, Page 1350-1368, July 2025.
Abstract Toothed whales, despite being one of the most acoustically specialized lineages of vertebrates, lack detailed vocal repertoire characterizations comparable to those of songbirds and primates. Current descriptions often lack standardization, limiting interspecies and intraspecies comparisons critical for understanding the contribution of ...

Rthoptera: Standardised insect bioacoustics in R

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 6, Page 1084-1094, June 2025.
Abstract Almost 100 years after the dawn of insect bioacoustics, freely available and robust analysis tools and protocols are still needed. We introduce Rthoptera, an open‐source R package designed for robust analysis of insect acoustic signals. It delivers accurate temporal and spectral measurements, along with intuitive visualisations, through a ...
