Hydrogen Production with a Microbial Biocathode
Environmental Science & Technology, 2007This paper, for the first time, describes the development of a microbial biocathode for hydrogen production that is based on a naturally selected mixed culture of electrochemically active micro-organisms. This is achieved through a three-phase biocathode startup procedure that effectively turned an acetate- and hydrogen-oxidizing bioanode into a ...

Microbial electrolysis cell with a microbial biocathode
Bioelectrochemistry, 2010This study demonstrates, for the first time, the proof-of-principle of an MEC in which both the anodic and cathodic reaction are catalyzed by microorganisms. No expensive chemical catalysts, such as platinum, are needed. Two of these MECs were simultaneously operated and reached a maximum of 1.4 A/m(2) at an applied cell voltage of 0.5 V.

Biocathodic Nitrous Oxide Removal in Bioelectrochemical Systems
Environmental Science & Technology, 2011Anthropogenic nitrous oxide (N(2)O) emissions represent up to 40% of the global N(2)O emission and are constantly increasing. Mitigation of these emissions is warranted since N(2)O is a strong greenhouse gas and important ozone-depleting compound. Until now, only physicochemical technologies have been applied to mitigate point sources of N(2)O, and no ...

Peroxidase biocathodes for a biofuel cell development
Journal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy, 2010In terms of sustainable energy production, enzymatic biofuel cells are attractive for a number of special applications, such as disposable implantable power suppliers for medical sensor-transmitters and drug delivery/activator systems and self-powered enzyme-based biosensors; they offer practical advantages of using abundant organic raw materials as ...

Controlled sequential biocathodic denitrification for contaminated groundwater bioremediation
Science of The Total Environment, 2019Nitrate groundwater contamination is a worldwide concern. In this study, a novel 2-stage, sequential biocathodic denitrification system was tested to perform autotrophic denitrification of synthetic groundwater. The system was operated at different nitrate loading rates (66-301 gNO3--N m-3NCC d-1) at constant NO3--N concentration (40 mgNO3--N L-1), by ...

Laccase-based biocathodes: Comparison of chitosan and Nafion
Analytica Chimica Acta, 2016Chitosan and Nafion(®) are both reported as interesting polymers to be integrated into the structure of 3D electrodes for biofuel cells. Their advantage is mainly related to their chemical properties, which have a positive impact on the stability of electrodes such as the laccase-based biocathode.

High Current Density Air-Breathing Laccase Biocathode
Journal of The Electrochemical Society, 2010Although biofuel cell research has progressed over the past decade, there were still problems with employing enzymes at air-breathing cathodes, because enzymes need to remain hydrated and most enzyme reactions occur in solution and not in gas phase. This research details an approach to the development of an air-breathing biocathode employing direct ...

Sustainable photosynthetic biocathode in microbial desalination cells
Chemical Engineering Journal, 2015Microbial desalination cells (MDCs) provide for simultaneous wastewater treatment and desalination while producing clean electricity from the organic wastes. However, one major drawback with MDCs technology is its unsustainable cathode chamber where expensive catalysts and toxic chemicals are employed for electricity generation, similar to other ...
